Erie, Pa. – The Edinboro men's basketball team dropped an 82-74 decision to host Gannon Wednesday night at the Highmark Event Center.
Gannon jumped out to a 13-5 lead after a Mason Bennett layup at the 17:02 mark of the first half. Edinboro responded with a 12-4 run capped by a
Daunte Wilcott layup with 10:10 left in the first tying the game 17-17.
The Golden Knights pushed the lead back out to nine, 30-21, with a 13-4 run of their own that ended with a Justin Debuck layup with 2:31 on the clock.
Evan Berger converted an and-one with 2:10 to play in the opening frame to cut the lead to 30-24. The Golden Knights closed the half on a 6-3 spurt to take a 36-27 lead into the locker room.
Berger scored the first six points of the second half for the Scots and cut the lead to 40-33 with a jumper at the 18:08 mark. Pace Prosser scored five straight points for Gannon to push the lead back out to 45-33 with 16:55 to play.
Edinboro answered with an 8-4 spurt capped by a
Bryce Baez layup with 13:38 on the clock cutting the deficit to 49-41. Prosser used an old-fashion 3-point play to put Gannon up 10, 59-49, with 10:32 remaining.
Wilcott hit a layup at the 10:21 mark sparking a 6-2 run capped by a
Jonathan Anderson 3-pointer to pull the Scots withing six, 61-55, at the 9:28 mark. The Golden Knights scored the next six points capped by a Victor Desmond layup to make the score 67-55 with 7:19 to play.
The Scots battled back getting as close as 75-69 on an Anderson layup with 1:12 left, but a Bennett triple pushed the lead back to 78-69 with 42 seconds left. Three free throws form
Steve Kelly with 20 seconds to play closed the gap to 80-74, but that was as close as Edinboro would get as Ernest Shelton hit a pair of free throws to set the final.
Wilcott led the Scots in scoring with 17 points.
Jonathan Anderson finished with 14 points including 4-of-9 from long range.
Evan Berger chipped in 12 points and five rebounds while Baez added 10 points and eight boards.
Prosser led the Golden Knights with 25 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Debuck was the only other Gannon player in double figures with 15.
The Scots return to action on Saturday when they host Pitt-Johnstown at 3 p.m. inside McComb Fieldhouse.
