California, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team scored an 81-79 victory over host California (Pa.) to claim the PSAC West Regular Season Championship and the top-seed in next week's PSAC Championship Tournament.
The Scots held a 77-71 lead with 2:16 on the clock. Sierra Bermudez hit a pair of free throws to trim the lead to 77-73.
Ashten Boggs split a pair of free throws to push the advantage to 78-73 with 26 second remaining. The Vulcans hit a pair of free throws at the other end to trim the lead to 78-73.
Morgan Gentile went 1-of-2 at the line to make it 79-75 and Allycia Harris hit a layup to cut the advantage to 79-77 with 7 seconds left.
Ava Haddad hit a pair of free throws with 6 seconds left to extend the advantage to 81-77 and seal the victory.
Edinboro trailed 15-8 early after an Alicia Young layup at the 5:01 mark of the first quarter. The Scots closed the first quarter on a 16-2 run with six different Scots scoring to take a 24-17 lead after one.
The Scots kept the momentum going into the second quarter.
Rachael Manfredo opened the frame with a bucket in the paint. Boggs hit a layup as well as Gentile to push the advantage to 30-17 with 8:26 on the clock in the second quarter.
Cal pushed back with a 14-8 spurt to trim the Edinboro lead to 38-31 after a Bermudez triple with 3:50 left in the second quarter. Boggs connected on a pair of free throws at the 3:26 mark and Gentile and
Gabby McDuffie each made layups to put the Scots up 44-31 with 59 seconds left in the first half. Hope Hawkins hit a layup at the 32 second mark to cut Edinboro's lead to 44-33 at the break.
In the second half, Cal cut the lead to 48-40 at the 7:08 mark of the third quarter. Boggs scored four straight points for the Scots to go back up 52-40 with 6:14 on the clock. The Vulcans went on a 10-5 spurt to trim the lead to 57-50 with 1:55 left in the third. The teams traded baskets with the Scots holding a 61-54 lead into the final frame.
The fourth quarter started with six straight points for the Scots capped by a Gentile layup at the 7:49 mark extending the lead to 67-54 with 7:49 to play. Cal pushed back with seven straight points of their own to cut the lead to 67-61 with 5:52 remaining. McDuffie scored a layup at the 5:52 mark to end the run and make the score 69-61. Talia Gilliard connected on a triple at 5:22 to cut the lead to 69-64.
Gentile led the Edinboro offense with a double-double of 23 points and 10 rebounds. Boggs added 20 points and eight boards. McDuffie just missed a double-double with 18 points and nine rebounds. Haddad and Manfedo each tallied eight points.
Bermudez paced the Vulcans with 21 points. Harris tallied a double-double of 16 points and 14 rebounds. Gilliard also tallied 16 points.
The Scots are the top seed in the PSAC West and will have a bye to PSAC Quarterfinals on Wednesday. Edinboro will play host to the winner of the IUP-Cal game on Monday night. Tipoff for the quarterfinal game is 5:30 p.m.
