Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team saw their outstanding season come to an end on Saturday after a 67-52 loss to IUP in the NCAA Atlantic Region Semifinal inside McComb Fieldhouse.
The Scots held a 42-41 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Ellie Wilkerson gave IUP the lead, 44-42, with a 3-pointer 17 seconds into the quarter.
Hayley Sims tied the game with a jumper at the 9:20 mark. The Crimson Hawks scored the next seven points with five coming from Shamia Strayhorn.
Edinboro closed the gap to six, 53-47 after a layup by
Morgan Gentile at the 5:20 mark, but a Marin Miller layup and Strayhorn triple extended the IPU lead to 58-47 with 4:05 to play. Sims cut the lead to 58-50 with 3:36 left in the game, but that was as close as the Scots would get as the Crimson Hawks iced the game at the free throw line.
The Scots got out to a lead early with
Ava Haddad giving Edinboro an 8-4 lead with a layup at the 5:37 mark of the first quarter. Wilkerson hit a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 8-6.
Morgan Gentile capped a 7-4 spurt with a layup at the 2:44 mark to push the advantage to 15-10. Baskets by Grace Centrulla and Wilkerson cut the lead to 15-14 with 1:45 to play in the first.
Rachael Manfredo knocked down a pair of free throws and
Ashten Boggs hit a jumper at the horn to give Edinboro a 19-14 lead after one.
Manfredo opened the scoring in the second quarter with a 3-pointer to extend the lead to 22-14. Nyshae' Weaver and Wilkerson scored for the Crimson Hawks to cut the lead to 22-18. A Haddad free throw followed by five straight points for Gentile extended the Edinboro lead to 28-18 with 3:34 left in the second. IUP closed the quarter on a 9-2 run to trim the halftime deficit to 30-27.
The Crimson Hawks came out of the half firing opening on a 10-2 run to grab a 37-32 lead on a Strayhorn layup at the 5:46 mark. Edinboro answered back with a 10-3 spurt of their own capped by a Sims 3-pointer to retake the lead 42-40 with 32 seconds left in the third. Strayhorn split a pair of free throws in the final seconds of the quarter to make it 42-41 after three.
Gentile led the Scots with 18 points to go with five boards, three assists and two blocks. Sims added 16 points, six rebounds and three blocks. Boggs grabbed a team-leading 10 boards while scoring six points.
Wilkerson paced the IUP offense with 24 points to go with seven rebounds and four steals. Strayhorn chipped in 18 points and five boards.
The Scots finished the season with a record of 25-7 overall.
