California, Pa. – The Edinboro softball team split a PSAC West doubleheader at California (Pa.) on Friday afternoon.
The Scots dropped a 9-3 decision in the first game before getting the bats rolling in an 11-9 victory in the nightcap.
Game One
In the opener, the Vulcans jumped out early scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Cal extended the lead to 8-0 with a run in the second and two more in the third.
Facing the run rule in the fifth inning,
Ashley Rose singled home
Isabella Becker and
Adeline Maguire recorded and RBI groundout to cut the lead to 8-2. The Vulcans tacked on one more in the sixth to extend the lead to 9-2. Maguire tripled home Rose in the top of the seventh to set the final.
Rose led the offense with a 2-for-3 game at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Maguire drove home a pair of runs.
Giana Ficcaglia took the loss in the circle allowing six runs, four earned, with three strikeouts in two innings of work.
Game Two
In the second contest, Edinboro got out to a lead in the top of the first. Maguire led off the inning with a double and then stole third, Abbey Olejniczak brought home Maguire with a groundout. The Scots scored twice more once on an RBI double from
Cassidy Weller and then when Weller scored on a passed ball.
The Vulcans answered with six runs to take a 6-3 lead after the first. Edinboro scored one run in the second and one more in the fifth to cut the lead to 6-5. Cal pushed the lead to 7-5 with a run of their own in the fifth.
In the sixth, Maguire hit a solo home run to trim the lead to 7-6. In the seventh, Weller led off with a double. Becker followed with a double of her own to plate Weller tying the game 7-7. A pair of ground outs put Becker at third with two outs.
Emalie Thomas singled home Becker to put the Scots up 8-7. Rose singled and both runners moved up on a passed ball. Maguire hit her second home run in as many innings to extend the Edinboro lead to 11-7. Cal managed to score twice in the bottom of the seventh to trim the lead to 11-9 before Ficcaglia struck out Kirra Davis to seal the win.
Maguire was 3-for-5 in game two with four RBI and three runs. Weller was 3-f-r-3 with three runs scored. Olejniczak, Emiilia Marra and Rose each tallied a pair of hits.
Annalise Smith picked up the win allowing five runs, four earned in six innings of work. Ficcaglia earned the save striking out two in the seventh.
The Scots are back in action on Sunday when they travel to IUP for a doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
