Erie, Pa. – The Edinboro softball team split a PSAC West doubleheader with Gannon Thursday afternoon at McConnell Family Stadium.
The Scots were the home team in both games despite being played at Gannon. Edinboro took the opener 2-1 in a pitchers' duel before falling 7-0 in the nightcap.
Game One
After five shutout innings from both starting pitchers, Gannon opened the scoring in the top of the sixth. Emma Smerick reached with one out on a bunt single. She stole second and scored on a Natalia Mallozzi single to left.
In the bottom of the sixth,
Adeline Maguire doubled with one out and scored on a
Hilary Sissem single to right tying the score 1-1. After a strikeout,
Isabelle Bavaro doubled down the leftfield line to plate Sissem and give the Scots a 2-1 advantage.
The Golden Knights put the leadoff runner on and moved her to second with a sacrifice bunt. Mia Ryan lined to Bavaro at second who threw behind the runner for the double play to end the game.
Maguire and Sissem each went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Giana Ficcaglia allowed one run on four hits with four strikeouts in a complete game victory on just 88 pitches.
Game Two
In the second game, Gannon took a 1-0 lead in the to of the first when Smerick scored on a wild pitch.
The Golden Knights extended the lead to 7-0 with a six run outburst in the top of the third to set the final.
Sissem and Bavaro each notched a hit to lead the Edinboro offense.
Grace Kessel took the loss allowing seven runs on six hits.
Annalise Smith tossed 4.2 innings of scoreless relief allowing just two hits.
The Scots are back in action on Friday when they travel to Pitt-Johnstown for a 2 p.m. first pitch against the Mountain Cats.
