Softball Drops Pair of PSAC West Games to California (Pa.)

Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro softball team fell in both games of a PSAC West doubleheader to visiting California (Pa.) on Wednesday.
 
The Scots dropped a 9-0 decision in the opener and then fell 12-11 in a back-and-forth contest in the night cap.
 
Game One
The Vulcans jumped out 1-0 in the top of the first on a solo home run form Amarah McCutcheon. Cal scored seven runs in the top of the second led by a two-run homer from McCutcheon. In the fourth, McCutcheon drove in her fourth run of the game with a ground out scoring Carlena Fiorilli to set the final at 9-0.
 
Cassidy Weller and Emalie Thomas were each 1-for-2 at the plate to lead the Edinboro offense. Grace Kessel took the loss allowing eight runs on nine hits over 1.2 innings of work with a pair of strikeouts. Annalise Smith allowed one unearned run in 3.1 innings of relief.
 
Game Two
In the first inning of game two, Cal loaded the bases with one out. Katilyn Achtermeier hit a sac fly to make it 1-0, but the Scots held the Vulcans to just one run.
 
The Scots answered in the bottom of the inning on a two-run blast from Isabelle Bavaro, giving Edinboro the 2-1 advantage. In the third, Edinboro extended their lead. Emilia Marra led off with a single and promptly stole second. After a fly out, Tagan Basinger singled to left, putting runners on first and second. Abigail Olejniczak beat out an infield single and the throw got away from the pitcher allowing a run to score and putting runners on second and third. After another fly out, Hilary Sissem singled to right plating two runs and extending the lead to 5-1.
 
The Vulcans scored three runs in the top of the third to cut the lead to 5-4. In the bottom of the frame, Thomas belted a double to right center scoring Isabella Becker to push the lead to 6-4. In the fourth, Cal tied the game 6-6 before Achtermeier hit a two run homer to give the Vulcans an 8-6 lead.
 
Edinboro answered back in the bottom of the fourth, Weller cut the lead to one with an RBI fielder's choice scoring Olejniczak. Bavaro tied the game with an RBI single. Becker gave the Scots a 9-8 lead with single to left.
 
In the top of the fifth, the Vulcans regained the lead, 10-9, on a two-run single from Brianna Sersevic. It was Sersevic again in the seventh extending the led to 12-9 with another two-run single in the seventh.
 
The Scots cut the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Thomas singled with one. Olejniczak hit a slow roller to the pitcher and was going to beat the throw when the pitch threw behind Thomas at second. The throw went wide and rolled to the fence allowing both runners to score and cutting the lead to 12-11. After an Adeline Maguire walk, Sissem hit a ball sharply to short for the final out of the game.
 
Olejniczak was 4-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored to lead the Edinboro offense. Thomas, Becker, Bavaro and Sissem each had two hits.
 
Smith took the loss in relief, allowing four runs in an 1.1 of work with a pair of strikeouts.
 
The Scots are back in action on Friday when they travel to Seton Hill. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
