Edinboro, Pa. –
Stanislas Noel watched a second serve go long completing a thrilling comeback to send the Edinboro men's tennis team on to the NCAA Championships after a 4-3 victory over Fairmont State Saturday afternoon.
With the team score level 3-3, Noel and Kan Watanabe went to a third set tiebreak. Noel jumped out to a 3-1 lead and held a 4-2 lead as the players switched sides. Noel led 6-4 when Wantanabe's second serve went long securing the win for the Scots.
The Scots trailed the team score 3-1 after Kegan Karunagaran defeated
Arsen Tabaldyev 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Fabricio Sosa Pons kept Edinboro alive winning the number four singles match defeating Mohamed Mostafa Moens 7-6, 6-1.
Leon Grassnickel took the first set from Hugo Lena 7-5, but fell behind 5-1 in the second set. He roared back winning six straight games to take the match with another 7-5 decision tying the match at 3-3.
After Fairmont State took a 1-0 lead with the doubles points, Haruto Kusunaki extended the lead with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at number two over
Mathis Amsellem.
Thomas Buchard claimed a 6-4, 6-2 win over Gabriel Masu to make it 2-1 Falcons.
In doubles action, Grassnickel and
Rocco Palombarini struck first for the Scots defeating Kusunaki and Masu 6-1. Karunagaran and Watanabe leveled the score with a 6-4 win over Amsellem and Noel at number two. The third doubles went to a tiebreak with Alex Stacy and Jasper De Bruijn winning 7-6 over Buchard and
Gerardo Garrido Guzman.
The Scots will travel to Alamonte Springs, Fla. for the first round of the NCAA Championships. The championship starts on May 20 with the Scots opponent to be determined.
