Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro Athletic Department announced the 11 inductees into the Edinboro Athletic Hall of Fame as selected by the Hall of Fame Committee. The induction ceremony is scheduled for Sept. 26, 2025.
The reception with open at 5:45 p.m. with the induction ceremony set for 7 p.m. The Class of 2025 includes standouts from softball, wheelchair basketball, women's basketball, women's soccer, women's swimming, and wrestling. This class also includes the first team ever inducted into the Edinboro Hall of Fame.

1970 Lambert Bowl Football Team
The 1970 Lambert Bowl Football Team is the first team inducted into the Edinboro Athletics Hall of Fame. The Scots were 8-0 in the regular season and defeated perennial powerhouse West Chester in the Pennsylvania Conference title game. The Scots season came to an end with a loss to Westminster in the NAIA semifinals.
After the season the Scots were awarded the Lambert Trophy as the ECAC Best Team in the East. Ebby Hollins and Al Raines were both NAIA Little All-America selections. Hollins and Raines were also All-PSAC choices along with Steve Hamm, Paul Burkell, Joe Sanford, Rich Iorfido and Bob Mengerink.

Vanessa (Rose) Borkowski ('09)
One of the greatest pitchers in Edinboro history, Vanessa holds six career records for the Scots: wins (44), innings pitched (597), strikeouts (590), games pitched (102), complete games (76) and shutouts (24). Her career ERA of 2.09 ranks sixth in school history.
She was a two-time All-PSAC selection earning first-team honors in 2007 and second team in 2008. Her name is also all over the single season records as well where she holds the top mark for innings pitched with 202, strikeouts with 234, games pitched with 31 and complete games with 29 all in her stellar 2007 season. During that 2007 season, Rose threw a shutout as the Scots defeated reigning National Champions Lock Haven 1-0 breaking the Bald Eagles 34-game winning streak. Edinboro qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first-time that season. She has three of the top seven single season strikeout marks and holds not only the top spot, but also the second most complete games in a season. She has three of the top eight seasons in shutouts as well.
Since graduation she has worked in the Intensive Care Unit at Allegheny General Hospital.
Rebecca Costello ('15, '21)
Costello was the Edinboro soccer program's first and only United Soccer Coaches' Association All-American. She is a four-time All-PSAC selection with three first-team honors. As a defender, she ranks 12
th in career assists and 16
th in career points with 44. As a junior she was a unanimous all-region first-team selection.
In her senior season, she named the PSAC Defensive Player of the Year as well as earning unanimous recognition as a first-team all-region choice. She earned All-American honors from the United Soccer Coaches Association. Costello was a two-time team captain. In addition to her on-field accomplishments, she was an active member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee traveling to conferences and working on Make-a-Wish projects.
After graduation, Costello has taught in the Erie City and Millcreek Township School Districts for the past 10 years. She is currently teaching fifth grade in the Millcreek School District. She also coaches junior varsity girls' soccer at McDowell High School as well as middle school girls soccer.
Andy Garbarino ('12)
Garbarino was a National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) second-team All-American in 2008-09 and went on to earn first-team honors in 2011-12. He was a member of Team USA at the 2011 Para Pan Games where the Americans claimed Gold. He was also an alternate for the 2012 USA Paralympic Team. He was a three-time Edinboro Scholar-Athlete.
Since graduating with his degree in business administration, he has worked in Financial Planning and Analysis at EMC, Dell, National Grid, Precisely and Revolutionary Clinics. He is currently the Founder and Business Owner of Make Life Easy.
David Habat ('15)
Habat was an all-time great with Edinboro wrestling finishing his career 134-27 the fifth most wins in school history. He was a four-time PSAC Champion and won EWL Championships in 2013 and 2014.
He earned the first of his two All-American honors in 2014 finishing fourth at 149 pounds. In the historic 2015 season, he finished 36-3 finishing second at the NCAA Championships at 149 earning his second All-American finish. He was the 2015 EWL Co-Wrestler of the Year alongside teammate Mitchell Port.
He was a six-time member of the Slovenia world team. He earned a European Championship bronze medal at the 2017 Championships. He was an Olympic alternate in 2016 and 2021 for Slovenia.
After graduation, Habat began his coaching career at Highland High School in Medina, Ohio. He is currently the strength and head wrestling coach at Western Reserve Academy.
Mitchell Port ('15)
Another member of the historic 2015 wrestling squad, Port closed out his career with a record of 132-17. He was a four-time NCAA qualifier, three-time All-American and two-time NCAA runner-up. His 35 career falls ranks ninth in Edinboro history.
Port was a three-time EWL Champion and four-time PSAC Champion. Port was named the EWL Wrestler of the Year in 2013, 2014 and shared the award with teammate David Habat in 2015. He was named PSAC Wrestler of the Year in 2013 and 2015.
Port made his first run to the NCAA finals at 141 pounds in the 2012-13 season. He finished third in 2013-14 with his only loss of the season coming in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship. He wrestled back to place third. In 2014-15, Port returned to the title match at 141 pounds earning second-place and his third All-American honor.
After graduation, Port served as an assistant coach for the Scots from 2015-2018. He is currently the assistant coach at West Virginia University.
AJ Schopp ('15)
Schopp was a four-time NCAA qualifier, earning three All-American honors, and was a three-time Eastern Wrestling League Champion. He ranks fifth in career wins with a record of 133-17.
In 2013 and 2014, Schopp placed fourth at the NCAA Championships. In 2015, he posted hist best finish winning seven straight matches after being upended in the first round to place-third. He earned the Gorriaran Award for the most falls in the least amount of time with four pins in 11:53 during wrestle backs.
You can find Schopp's name all over the Fighting Scot record book as he holds the second-best win percentage in school history at .887 and his 133 career wins ranks sixth. His 67 falls are still the most in program history and each of his four seasons are inside the Top-20 for falls in a season.
After graduation, Schopp spent two seasons as an assistant at South Dakota State. He helped South Dakota State to their first-ever Big 12 Conference Championship and the programs first Division I All-Americans. He spent seven years at Purdue as an assistant coach where he coached multiple All-Americans. He has returned to Edinboro as the head assistant coach in 2024.
Staci Schrecongost ('15, '18)
Schrecongost was a two-time All-American who holds three individual school records and is a pair of two school record relay teams. She holds the Edinboro record in the 100-freestyle, 200-freestyle, and 500-freestyle and was on the school record holding 400 and 800-freestyle relays.
In her stellar senior season, she won the PSAC Championship in the 200-freestyle. She would go on to finish seventh in the 200 at the NCAA Championships to earn All-American honors. Also, at the 2015 NCAA Championships she was 15
th in the 500-freestyle earning her honorable mention All-American honors. In her career, she was a seven-time All-PSAC performer.
After graduation, she spent the 2015-16 season as a graduate assistant for the Scots before moving on to the University of Richmond as an assistant coach. She was on the coaching staff when the Spiders claimed the 2017 Atlantic 10 Championship. After her time at the University of Richmond she worked at Richmond Pediatrics Dentistry and Orthodontics.
Kiara Thomas (Brown) ('13, '14)
Thomas played three seasons at Edinboro and scored 1,278 points to rank 19
th all-time in Fighting Scot history. She was the first Fighting Scot to earn Women's Basketball Coaches' Association First-Team All-American honors twice. She was also a two-time all-region and three-time All-PSAC selection with a pair of first-team choices.
In the 2012-13 season, she led the PSAC in scoring at 17.3 points per game to go with 3.8 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game. She finished her career as just the ninth player to record 1,100 career points and 200 career steals. After the 2012-13 season, her jersey was displayed in the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame as part of the All-American exhibit.
She is in her fifth year as a Special Education Teacher at Gainesville High School in Virginia. She is also an assistant coach for the Gainesville girls' varsity basketball team and is working on her MAT in Special Education at Liberty University.
Mike DeAnna (Lifetime Achievement in Sports)
DeAnna was a highly respected and accomplished head wrestling coach. As the head coach of the Scots, he oversaw the transition from NCAA Division II to Division I. In his time at Edinboro, he coached five Division II National Champions and the Scots first Division I National Champion. He was the National Amateur Wrestling News Rookie Coach of the Year in 1985. He led the 1985-86 wrestling team to a second-place finish at the NCAA Division II National Championships.
He is fourth all time in wins (54) and winning percentage (.612). In his tenure, he coached 14 All-Americans with seven Division II and seven Division I. He earned EWL Coach of the Year honors in 1989 and served a term as President of the EWL.
In his collegiate wrestling career, he finished with a 123-18 record at the University of Iowa. He was a four-time Big 10 Champion and four-time All-American including two trips to the NCAA Title match. He was a two-time AAU National Freestyle Champion. He was an alternate for the 1984 Olympic Team.
He is currently self-employed as the president of his own property management company and a partner in a real estate title company. He still promotes wrestling via sponsorship of clubs, tournaments, athletes in training and scholarships.
Mike Zafirovski (Distinguished Service, '75)
Mike Zafirovski is the Founder, Chairman, and President of The Zaf Group, a family office engaged in operating, investment, and advisory activities. The operating activities include acquiring well-run family businesses with the intention of owning in perpetuity. Currently, the two platform companies are ACP CreativIT, an IT solutions provider and ABCO Systems, a material handling systems integrator for warehouses and distribution centers.
An avid supporter of Edinboro Athletics, he has been generous with both his time and finances. He was instrumental to the construction of the Recreation Dome that bears his name. The indoor facility has hosted conference championships and given countless opportunities to Edinboro student-athletes across nearly all teams. Mike also continues to be our largest annual individual contributor to athletic scholarships benefiting countless student-athletes. Mike continues to return for alumni swim meets and reunions and volunteers to share his experience with Edinboro student-athletes.
In his time at Edinboro, he spent three seasons on the swim team and played four seasons of soccer. He was a two-time national qualifier in swimming. He was also the Theta Chi Fraternity president. He received an honorary doctorate from Edinboro in 2002 and gave the commencement address. He has also guest lectured at Northwestern, Duke and Stanford.
He has received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor (2004); the Distinguished Leadership Award from the NY Hall of Science (2008); the Medal of Honor from the President of Macedonia (2013); and the inaugural John L. Bitove Philanthropy Award (2017).
