Women's Volleyball Drops a Pair of Contests at Pioneer Classic

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. — The Edinboro women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches at the Pioneer Classic at Pioneer Arena, first dropping a five-set thriller to Converse, 3-2, before falling to Lee in a four-set match, 3-1.

In the match against Converse, The Valkyries jumped out to a  4-1 lead in the first. Edinboro's Emma Hiott and Reilly Parent each contributed crucial kills that helped close the gap to 7-4. The Scots rallied from a 19-16 deficit, aided by a service ace from Molly Stayer and consecutive errors from Converse, ultimately taking a 21-20 lead. Edinboro sealed the set, 25-22, with a final kill by Makayla Neelands.

The second set saw Converse initially pull ahead with a 7-3 advantage, capitalizing on a series of errors by Edinboro. The Scots responded with a service ace from Grace Petro at 17-11, sparking a brief rally that brought them to within three points at 19-16. Despite a strong effort from Edinboro, including a service ace by Laney Burns to level the score at 23-23, Converse managed to secure the set 25-23.

In the third set, Edinboro took an early 1-0 lead, but Converse quickly took control with a 3-0 run to lead 8-6. Kennedy Caldwell and Parent picked up kills to keep the team in contention, but the Valkyries extended their lead to 19-14. Edinboro fought back with a pair of kills and a block from Maggie Koster, narrowing the gap to 24-22. However, a service error ended the set with Converse clinching a 25-22 victory.

Edinboro began the fourth set strong, but Converse responded with a 3-0 run. The Scots went on a 6-0 run of their own, highlighted by kills from Parent and Caldwell, taking a 10-5 advantage. Edinboro held off a push from the Valkyries to take a 25-15 set win.

In a tightly contested fifth set, Edinboro and Converse traded points early on, with Parent recording several key kills, putting Edinboro up 6-3. However, a string of errors allowed Converse to pull even at 6-6. The Valkyries then went on a 6-1 run, extending their lead to 13-7 and finished the match with a 15-10 final score. 

Parent led Edinboro with 16 kills and added 10 digs, while Neelands chipped in 15 digs and two solo blocks. Burns dished out 22 assists and recorded nine digs, and Klaresajane Sivas tallied 16 digs.

Later in the day, Edinboro faced Lee, starting strong in the first set with Neelands delivering an early service ace to put the Scots ahead 3-1. Parent and Koster combined for a pivotal block, helping establish a 5-3 lead. However, Lee responded with a decisive service run from Sara Palumbo, who notched five consecutive aces to propel the visitors to a 10-7 advantage. Despite strong efforts from Edinboro, including three kills from Parent and two from Hiott, Lee capitalized on a series of Edinboro attack errors to take the first set 25-19.

The second set opened strong for Edinboro, with Neelands delivering a kill and a service ace to propel the Scots to a 4-0 lead. After a mid-set rally by Lee tied the score at 15-15, Edinboro regained momentum when Parent and Koster contributed key kills down the stretch. Petro's effective setting and timely service ace helped seal the set for Edinboro, securing a narrow 25-22 victory.

Lee opened the third set with an 8-0 lead, capitalizing on multiple errors from Edinboro, and maintained their momentum to close the set 25-13, taking a 2-1 edge in the match.

In the fourth set, Lee took an early 2-0 lead, but Edinboro quickly tied the score with kills from Neelands and Parent. However, Lee closed out the set 25-22 to take the match. 

Parent led the Scots with 18 kills, while Petro facilitated the offense with 17 assists and a service ace. Burns added six digs and 15 assists, and Neelands contributed 11 kills and two service aces.
