Men’s Basketball Rallies Past Seton Hill for PSAC West Victory

Edinboro, Pa. – A strong second half lifted the Edinboro men's basketball team to an 81-72 victory over visiting Seton Hill Saturday afternoon in PSAC West action inside McComb Fieldhouse.
 
The Scots trailed 32-30 at the half. Rowan Carmichael came out of the break and scored the first four points of the frame to put Edinboro ahead 34-32 at the 18:49 mark. The Griffins answered with a 9-4 spurt to pull ahead 41-38 with 16:40 remaining.
 
Amaan Sandhu scored a tip in and Evan Berger connected on a 3-pointer to give the Scots the lead back 43-41. Mekhi Reynolds hit a jumper with 14:45 on the clock to extend the Edinboro lead to 45-41with 14:45 left.
 
The Griffins trimmed the lead to 47-45 on a pair of Camden Brewer free throws with 12:51 to play. Berger hit a free throw after the Griffins were called for a flop technical. Berger scored a jumper on the ensuing possession to push the lead to 50-45. Carmichael scored a layup after a steal. After an offensive foul, Carmichael knocked down a triple to extend the advantage to 55-45 at the 11:09 mark.
 
Gabe Gillespie hit a free throw to stop the Scot run. Reynolds caught fire from beyond the arc hitting three straight 3-pointers to put the Scots ahead 64-46 with 8:39 left in the contest. The Edinboro lead was still 18, 70-52, after a Carmichael trey with 5:11 on the clock.
 
The Griffins cut the lead to 75-63 after a Rashaad Willaims layup with 1:44 left. Ibrahim Abdulmateen-Robinson made a layup to push the advantage to 77-63. A pair of 3-pointers by the Griffins on either side of a pair of Carmichael free throws trimmed the Edinboro lead to 79-69. Reynolds hit a pair of free throws to extend the lead to 81-69 and the Griffins hit one more triple to set the final.
 
Seton Hill jumped out to an early 18-5 after a Ben Myers layup at the 14:21 mark of the first half. Carmichael hit a jumper and Berger connected on a 3-pointer with 13:20 on the clock to trim the lead to 18-10. Kedrick Curtis scored the next four points to push the lead to 22-10 with 11:48 to go in the first.
 
The Scots battled back using the long ball with Reynolds and Carmichael hitting triples. Reynolds scored a fastbreak layup to pull within 22-18 with 8:42 left in the first. Seton Hill scored the next four points to take a 26-18 lead with 6:56 remaining. Berger stopped the run with a jumper. Reynolds and Dakari Bradford each hit 3-pointers to tie the game at 26 with 4:23 to go.
 
Seton Hill retook the lead with a pair of layups to make it 30-26 with 2:05 left in the first. Baez hit a layup to pull within 30-28. Dimitrio Skalvenitis extended the lead to 32-28. Carmichael netted a layup at the 46 second mark to send the Scots into the break down 32-30.
 
Carmichael finished with 30 points including five 3-pointers to go with four assists. Reynolds added 22 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals. Berger added 15 points and seven rebounds. Baez pulled down a team-high 12 boards.
 
Williams led the Griffins with 17 points and six assists. Ortiz chipped in 16 points and 12 rebounds.
 
The Scots are back in action on Wednesday when they host Slippery Rock at 7:30 p.m. inside McComb Fieldhouse.
