Mekhi Reynolds scored 27 points leading five Fighting Scots in double figures as the Edinboro men's basketball team defeated host Clarion 93-78 Saturday afternoon in PSAC West action.
With the score tied 4-4 early, the Scots went on a 12-2 run with five different players scoring a bucket and
Amaan Sandhu leading the way with four points to go up 16-6 at the 14:27 mark. The Golden Eagles pushed back with a 10-4 spurt of their own capped by a Kendon Peebles layup to trim the lead to 20-14 with 9:24 to go in the first half.
Ibrahim Abdulmateen-Robinson made a layup and Reynolds completed an and-one to extend the lead to 25-14 with 8:35 on the clock. Clarion used a 9-3 run to cut the lead to 28-26 after a Justice Easter trey at the 3:57 mark.
Rowan Carmichael scored a layup and
Evan Berger hit a triple to push the lead back out to 33-26 with 2:32 left in the opening half. Gavin Cote hit a 3-pointer at the other end to trim the lead to 33-29.
Bryce Baez and Sandhu each recorded dunks to send the Scots into the locker room with a 27-29 lead.
In the second half, Carmichael made a layup and Reynolds a 3-pointer sandwiching a Golden Eagle layup to extend the Edinboro advantage to 42-31 a minute into the half. Clarion chipped away at the lead using a 15-7 spurt capped by a Trey Nelson dunk and free throw to cut the lead to 49-46 with 13:43 to play.
The next six points went to the Scots after a Reynolds layup and four points from Baez on a layup and two free throws. Nelson completed another and-one to slow the run, but a Reynolds 3-pointer sparked eight straight points for the Scots extending the lead to 63-49 with 9:17 to play.
Clarion trimmed the lead to 68-59 on a Cote trey, but that was the last time the Scot lead dipped into single digits as Edinboro went on an 11-4 run with Reynolds hitting a 3-pointer at 3:21 to push the lead out to 79-63. The Scots held the Golden Eagles at arm's length the rest of the way.
Reynolds added nine assists and five rebounds to his game-high 27 points. Baez notched a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Berger also scored 17 while dishing out four assists and grabbing four boards. Carmichael chipped in 15 points and two helpers while Sandhu tallied 12 points and seven rebounds.
Nelson paced the Golden Eagles with 27 points. Cam Crockett added 14 points and Justice finished with 10.
The Scots return to action on Saturday when they host IUP at 3 p.m. inside McComb Fieldhouse.
