Edinboro Sweeps Pitt-Johnstown 3-0

EDINBORO, Pa. — Edinboro defeated Pitt.-Johnstown 3-0 on Saturday at McComb Fieldhouse. The Fighting Scots hit .319 with 49 kills, compared with to 35 kills for UPJ.

The Scots turned a 4-4 tie into a 7-4 lead in the opening set on two Taylor Pucky kills, and a Suncica Lekic-Maggie Koster block. The Mountain Cats worked back to tie the score at 10-10. UPJ later moved ahead 14-12 from a Kiara Harmon ace and a Journey Welling kill, before Lekic's kill brought the Fighting Scots even at 14-14. After a 15-15 tie, the Scots scored on a Kamila Rodriguez Velez attack error and a Pucky kill to lead 17-15. Then a Koster block and Reilly Parent kill helped push the Fighting Scots in front 20-17. UPJ narrowed the set to 21-20, but a kill from Christina Lockett's, two kills from Pucky, and a Laney Burns' ace closed out the first set for the Scots' 25-20.

Pucky served consecutive aces to put the Fighting Scots ahead 6-4 early in the second set, but the Mountain Cats tied it up at 6-6 as the teams continued trading points. The Scots moved in front 13-11 from a Tatiana Williams kill and a UPJ attack error. The visitors then scored three straight points for a 14-13 lead and later went up 16-14. Parent, Pucky, D'Aira Whitner and Koster helped the Fighting Scots keep answering through the late exchanges. Koster's kill late gave the Scots a 22-21 edge. An attack error by Caroline Knight tied the set at 23-23. Finally, a Pucky ace and a Koster kill finished the set 25-23 for the Fighting Scots. 

To start the third, the Fighting Scots moved in front early with kills by Whitner, Parent and Pucky, and stretched the lead to 9-4 on a block by Lekic and Koster. Back-to-back Lekic kills stretched the lead. UPJ rallied to pull within 4, 11-7. However, a service error, a block, and a Parent kill pushed the Scots ahead 15-7. The Fighting Scots kept the margin with kills from Lockett, Pucky, Lekic and Koster on the way to a 20-10 lead. The Mountain Cats took three straight points, but Koster and Parent answered with kills to make it 22-13. Koster's kill gave the Scots set point at 24-16, and Parent finished the 25-17 set with a kill from Grace Petro.

Parent led the Fighting Scots with 13 kills and 15 points, adding seven digs and two block assists. Pucky posted 11 kills, 12 digs and three service aces. Koster finished with nine kills on a .364 hitting percentage and added four total blocks. Faith Schneider collected a team-high 14 digs and added five assists.

Up next, the Fighting Scots volleyball team hosts Gannon University on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 6 p.m. at McComb Fieldhouse in Edinboro, Pa.
