Women’s Basketball Knocks Off No. 5 Gannon

Erie, Pa. – Behind 22 points from Rachael Manfredo the Edinboro women's basketball team scored a 50-47 victory over No. 5 Gannon Wednesday evening at the Highmark Event Center.
 
The game was tight throughout and the score was tied 35-35 with 8:33 to play in the fourth quarter. Ava Haddad scored a layup and Manfredo made a pair of free throws to extend the lead to 39-35 with 7:29 remaining. Bella Deere hit a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 39-27. Haddad converted an and-one and Carla Brown hit a layup to extend the Scot lead to 44-37 at the 4:39 mark.
 
Gannon got a layup from Kate Ratliff and Manfredo hit two more free throws to keep the lead at seven, 46-39, with 2:30 to play. The Golden Knights scored the next five points to cut the advantage to 46-42 at the 46 mark. Manfredo stopped the run with a jumper with 13 seconds left to push the lead back to 48-44. Carissa Dunham hit a trey off the ensuing inbound to cut the lead to 48-47. Manfredo iced the game with a pair of free throws and a steal.
 
In the opening quarter, Gannon scored first on a Ratliff layup. Taylor Blunt hit a 3-pointer at the 8:27 mark to put the Scots ahead 3-2. Both teams were scoreless for almost three minutes before Blunt hit a pair of free throws to extend the lead to 5-2. Ratliff hit a pair of free throws of her own to cut the gap to 5-4. Haddad and Manfredo hit a layup each to extend the lead to 9-4 at the 3:43 mark. The Scots took a 10-7 advantage to the second.
 
Mia Slater cut the lead to 10-9 with the first two points of the second on a pair of free throws. Edinboro used an 11-5 spurt capped by a Manfredo triple to take a 21-14 lead with 2:30 left in the second. The Golden Knights answered with a 7-2 run to close the quarter and cut the Scot lead to 23-21 at the break.
 
Manfredo opened the third with a layup to extend the lead to 25-21. Gannon went on a 10-0 run to take their first lead since the game's opening bucket, 31-25 with 6:36 on the clock. The Scots answered back with 10 straight points of their own to take a 35-31 lead into the final frame.
 
In addition to her game-high 22 points, Manfredo added three rebounds and two steals. She was 7-of-12 from the field and 7-of-7 from the line. Haddad just missed a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds as well as two blocks and two steals. Blunt also reached double figure scoring with 10 points to go with five rebounds and a steal.
 
Ratliff was the only Golden Knight to score in double figures with 20 points while also grabbing nine rebounds and six steals. Jordan Popyk pulled down 11 rebounds to go with eight points.
 
The Scots return to action on Saturday when they travel to Pitt-Johnstown. Tip off is slated for 1 p.m.
