Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat visiting California (PA) 71-64 Saturday afternoon in PSAC West play inside McComb Fieldhouse.
The Vulcans held a 53-47 lead after a Kennedy Bankett layup at the 9:27 mark.
Taylor Blunt and
Rachael Manfredo each hit layups to trim the lead 53-51 at the 8:37 mark. Mya Morgan hit a 3-pointer to push the lead back to 56-51.
Ava Haddad hit a pair of free throws and Manfredo converted a layup to cut the lead to 56-55 with 6:24 to play. Kimaya Williams netted a layup to make the lead 58-55. The Scots scored the next six points grabbing a 61-58 lead after a
Taylor Blunt layup. Trinity Balog split a pair of free throws to trim Scots advantage to 61-59 with 2:03 on the clock. Blunt capped a 7-3 spurt with a 3-pointer at the 41 second mark to extend the lead to 68-64. The Scots iced the game at the free throw line to close out the contest.
The Vulcans got out to a fast start jumping out to a 9-2 lead on a Macy Sardone 3-pointer. Edinboro went on 12-4 run capped by a Haddad layup to take a 14-13 lead with 3:26 left in the opening quarter. The teams traded buckets with Edinboro up 16-15 at the 2:10 mark. The Vulcans score the final five points of the first to take a 20-16 advantage into the second.
Haddad scored the first four points of the second quarter to knot the score 20-20. Cal scored the next seven points to build a 27-20 lead at the 7:59 mark of the second. Edinboro responded with 10 straight points capped by a
Hope Garrity trey to take a 30-27 lead with 4:32 left in the second.
Taylor Phillips hit a 3-pointer at the 2:01 mark to put the Scots up 35-32. Cal finished the half with the final five points to take a 37-35 lead into the break.
Blunt tied the game with the first bucket of the second half. Cal responded with a 12-2 run to take a 49-39 lead on a Banket layup with 5:55 on the clock in the third. The Scots chipped away with the next six points to cut the advantage to 49-45 after a Manfredo layup. Bankett connected on a jumper to make it 51-45 Vulcans heading to the fourth.
Manfredo led all scorers with 24 points to go with five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Haddad added 16 points, eight boards and five assists. Blunt also reached double figures with 13 points.
Hope Hawkins led the Vulcans with 20 points, seven rebounds and two blocks. Sardone tallied 14 points while Bankett chipped in 11.
The Scots return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Slippery Rock. Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m.
