Softball Splits Doubleheader with Division I Canisius

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Edinboro softball team split a pair of games with Division I Canisius Tuesday afternoon.
 
The Scots dropped the opener 10-4 to the Griffins before scoring a 6-2 victory in game two.
 
In the opener, the Griffins jumped out to a 4-0 lead with four runs in the bottom of the first. A pair of runs in the bottom of the third pushed the lead to 6-0.
 
Lucy Higley put the Scots on the board in the fourth with a sacrifice fly that scored Cassidy Weller. The Griffins responded with four runs including a three-run home run by Alyssa Onyeagwa to go up 10-1.
 
Edinboro rallied in the top of the fifth. Abigail Oleniczak singled to lead off the frame before Isabella Becker and Hilary Sissem loaded the bases with walks. Weller drew a walk forcing home Olejniczak. Isabelle Bavaro drove home a run with a groundout and Adeline Maguire hit a sac fly to cut the lead to 10-4 which would stand as the final.
 
Olejniczak finished the game 2-for-3 with a run scored to lead the offense. Gianna Ficcaglia took the loss in the circle allowing six runs on six hits with one strikeout.
 
In the nightcap, the Scots struck first with Weller singling home Becker in the top of the first. The Griffins tied the game in the bottom of the first.
 
Higley broke the tie in the top of the third, singling to right with the bases loaded scoring Bavaro and Weller and putting the Scots up 3-1. Canisius got a run back in the bottom of the fourth to cut the Edinboro lead to 3-2.
 
In the top of the fifth, Maguire singled with one out and moved to third on an Emalie Thomas single. Higley connected on a sac fly to push the lead to 4-2. Thomas notched an RBI single and Higley a solo home run to add two insurance runs in the seventh setting the final 6-2 for the Scots.
 
Higley led the offense with two hits, four RBI and a run scored. Thomas added three hits and an RBI. Maguire also collected a pair of hits. Grace Kessel toss a complete game allowing two runs while scattering eight hits and striking out four.
 
The Scots return to action on Thursday when they host IUP in a PSAC West doubleheader originally scheduled for Saturday.
