Softball Falls in PSAC Doubleheader to Pitt-Johnstown

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro softball team fell in both halves of a PSAC West doubleheader to visiting Pitt-Johnstown Friday afternoon.
 
In the opener, the Scots dropped a 7-1 decision. The nightcap needed extra innings with the Mountain Cats taking a 5-4 win.
 
Pitt-Johnstown opened the scoring in the first game pushing two runs across in the top of the first on an Audrey Paterson RBI single and Mia Smith recorded an RBI groundout.
 
Isabella Becker drew a walk to open the bottom of the frame and stole second. Cassidy Weller singled Becker home to cut the lead to 2-1.
 
The Mountain Cats added a run on a groundout by Izzy DePalma in the top of the second. A four-run third opened the lead up to 7-1 and the teams would go scoreless the rest of the way to the final.
 
Hilary Sissem led the Edinboro offense going 2-for-3. Grace Kessel took the loss allowing five runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings of work.
 
Edinboro got on the board first in the second game. Becker led off the bottom of the first with a walk and steal of second. Sissem singled and brought Becker around to score. Weller singled and a UPJ misplayed loaded the bases. Adeline Maguire and Adoria Waldier hit back-to-back sacrifice flies to push the Edinboro lead to 3-0.
 
The Mountain Cats chipped away at the lead scoring two runs in the top of the second without the benefit of a hit. The Mountain Cats took the lead 4-3 with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. An RBI single from Becker in the bottom of the frame tied the game 4-4.
 
The game needed an extra frame where the Mountain Cats capitalized on a Scot error to push a run across and UPJ kept the Scots off the scoreboard to secure the win.
 
Becker was 1-for-3 with a walk a run scored and an RBI. Sissem and Weller each added a hit. Maguire and Waldier each picked up an RBI. Gianna Ficcaglia got a no-decision going 4.1 allowing four runs on four hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Kessel took the loss allowing one unearned run while not allowing a hit over 3.2 innings of work.
 
The Scots return to action on Friday when they host Gannon at 2 p.m.
