Offensive Explosion Lifts Softball to Doubleheader Sweep of California (PA)

Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro softball team scored 28 runs including six total home runs as they topped visiting California (PA) in both halves of a PSAC West doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon.
 
The Scots took the first game 14-6 in six innings and then rallied for a 14-13 walk-off in the second half of the twin bill.
 
Cal struck first in the opener, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Isabella Becker manufactured a run in the bottom of the third singling and then stealing second and third and scoring on a wild pitch all during Hilary Sissem's at bat. Sissem drew a walk and moved to third on a Cassidy Weller double. Adeline Maguire doubled scoring both Sissem and Weller tying the score 3-3.
 
The Vulcans went back ahead with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. Ashley Rose and Abigail Olejniczak notched back-to-back singles to start the bottom of the frame. Becker tripled driving in both runners and tying the game 5-5. Sissem groundout pushing Becker home and giving the Scots their first lead of the game.
 
Makayla Linkous doubled home a run for Cal in the top of the fifth tying the game again. The bats came alive for the Scots with two outs in the sixth. Alara Bem hit a solo home run to give Edinboro the lead back. The Scots notched seven more hits and took advantage of several Vulcan errors to push across eight runs in the inning and invoke the mercy rule 14-6.
 
Becker led the offense with three hits, three runs scored and two RBIs. Weller, Isabelle Bavaro, Maguire, Emalie Thomas and Bem each tallied pair of hits. Kelsey Warren picked up the win in relief allowing one unearned run in 2.2 innings pitched with three strikeouts and two walks.
 
In the second game, Cal jumped out early again scoring four runs in the top of the first. Weller got the Scots on the board in the bottom of the first hitting a three-run home run cutting the lead to 4-3.
 
Two Vulcan home runs in the top of the second pushed the Cal advantage to 9-3. In the bottom of the inning, Sissem singled home Becker and Bem to pull the Scots within 9-5. Weller hit her second home run of the game to cut the advantage to 9-7.
 
Cal scored one in the third and two in the fourth to extend their lead to 12-7. The Scots used the long ball to answer again in the bottom of the fifth. Maguire hit a solo shot to lead off the inning. An Olejniczak single and Mia Rogers walk put runners on first and second. Bem belted a three-run shot to make it 12-11.
 
Bem delivered the go ahead hit in the bottom of the sixth singling home Maguire and Bavaro to put the Scots up 13-12. Kirra Davis hit a solo home run for the Vulcans in the top of the seventh to tie the game. Lucy Higley was the walk-off hero for the Scots hitting a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh.
 
Weller went 3-for-4 with five RBIs and two runs scored. Becker tallied three more hits and scored two runs. Bem was 2-for-4 with five runs driven in. Weller also picked up the win with three innings of work in relief allowing one run with a strikeout.
 
The Scots return to action on Thursday when they host Seton Hill at 2 p.m.
