LOCK HAVEN, Pa. — The Edinboro women's volleyball team swept a pair of matches at the Lock Haven Invitational Saturday.
The Scots opened with a victory over host Lock Haven 3-2 and then going on to secure a 3-0 win over Virginia State in their final match of the tournament.
In the matchup against Lock Haven, the Bald Eagles started strong, taking the first set 25-11 with Olivia Taylor serving two aces and Madelyn Mitchell contributing two kills. The second set was tightly contested, as
Reilly Parent recorded two early kills and
Anna Saldana added an ace. The Scots managed to rally back from a 15-15 tie to win the set 26-24, thanks to a service error by Lock Haven followed by a kill from Parent.
The third set saw the Scots take a 7-4 lead, only to have Lock Haven come back and take a 21-16 lead. The Fighting Scots made a late push, but the Bald Eagles claimed the set 25-23 to go up 2-1 in the match. However, Edinboro responded in the fourth set, eventually winning 25-22 with a kill from Neelands sealing the set. In the decisive fifth set, the Scots took control with Neelands serving five straight points, including three aces, to win 15-9.
Neelands finished the match with impressive stats: nine kills, five service aces, 15 digs, and four blocks. Parent contributed 13 kills and 19 digs, while Schneider collected 21 digs and four assists. Petro added 28 assists, 13 digs, and three service aces.
In their final match of the Invitational against Virginia State, the Scots started strong, overcoming a 3-0 deficit to take the first set 25-20. Parent's kills and a timely block from
Christina Lockett helped push Edinboro ahead. The second set was closely contested, with both teams trading points, but the Scots ultimately prevailed 25-23 after a service error from the Trojans and a kill from Pucky.
The third set saw the Scots start with five consecutive points, but Virginia State fought back to take a brief lead at 19-15. The Fighting Scots rallied again, and Parent's three kills in a late run helped them close out the set 25-23, completing the sweep.
Parent led the team against Virginia State with 12 kills and nine digs, while Pucky contributed nine kills and Neelands tallied seven kills and three service aces. Petro recorded 16 assists, two aces, and six digs.
The Fighting Scots are back in action on Thursday when they travel to Gannon for the PSAC West opener. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
