EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro football team defeated Ohio Dominican 38-36 in triple overtime Thursday night at Sox Harrison Stadium as
Nico Marchitelli found Jerry Dinkins in the third overtime for the walk-off score.
The Scots trailed 21-7 after Ryan Elliott connected on a 47-yard field goal with 11:05 left in the third quarter. Edinboro cut the lead to 21-14 with a six-play, 81-yard drive capped by a 24-yard touchdown pass from
Bo Swartz to
Clayton Bezon at the 2:10 mark of the third.
Edinboro dominated possession in the fourth quarter in large part thanks to a 13-play, 95-yard drive that chewed up 6:43 of game time. On a key fourth and eight from near midfield Marchitelli hit
Jacob Coburn for 47 yards setting up a two-yard Swartz touchdown run to tie the game 21-21 with 5:43 to play.
In overtime, the Panthers had the ball first and scored a touchdown on a Nathan Webster rush up the middle. Elliott converted the PAT to make it 28-21. Edinboro answered the bell with Swatz finding the endzone again from two yards out. With the ball first in the second overtime and facing a fourth and goal from the two, Swartz shoveled the ball to
Jeremiah Neeley who scored and Swartz converted the two-point try to make it 36-28. The Panthers answered with a 12-yard strike from Carson Parker to Luke Hess. Parker ran in the two-point try to force a third overtime.
After the Edinboro defense stood tall and stopped the Panthers, Marchitelli hit Dinkins out of the backfield for a walk-in, walk-off score.
The game featured a little bit of everything including an hour plus lightning delay just over six minutes into the contest. It took a little time to get the swing of things, but the Scots got on the board first when Marchitelli hit Neeley over the middle for a 54-yard touchdown pass with 14:27 on the clock in the second quarter.
ODU scored the next 18 points on Paker touchdown passes to Conner Campbell and Roderick Love sandwiching an Elliott field goal to give the Panthers an 18-7 halftime edge.
Marchitelli went 19-of-36 for 258 and a touchdown while Swartz was 2-of-3 for 26 yards and two scores. Swartz also rushed six times for 26 yards and two touchdowns. Antwan Caesar rushed for a team best 72 yards while Dinkins finished with 63. Coburn led the receiving corps with seven catches for 103 yards.
Ty Reali led the defense making 12 tackles, seven solo, to go with an interception.
Nick Rossi added eight stops and
Jaden Branch seven.
Parker passed for 172 yards and three scores while rushing for 68. Campbell led the receivers with four catches for 49 yards. Harlee Hann notched a team-high 13 stops.
It was the first win for the Scots interim head coach
Eric Crandall.
The Scots return to action on Saturday, Sept. 12 when they travel to Bloomsburg for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
