LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (Oct. 16, 2012) – Senior
Karisa Fernandez and freshman
Jansen Hartmann each found the net on Tuesday afternoon as the Edinboro women's soccer team secured a 2-0 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference triumph over Lock Haven.
With the win, sophomore goalkeeper
Meghan Kelly tied the school record for shutouts in a season with six. The Fighting Scots now have eight total shutouts as a team for the season, two off the record set a year ago.
The Fighting Scots improve to 10-3-1 overall and 7-3-1 in the PSAC while Lock Haven falls to 6-4-4, 3-4-4 respectively. The victory, coupled with a Shippensburg loss at Mercyhurst earlier in the day, locks the Fighting Scots into the conference postseason tournament for the third straight year. It is also the third consecutive season Edinboro has reached double-digit victories.
Edinboro worked its way on the scoreboard in just the fifth minute of action. Hartmann scooped up a wayward Lock Haven header attempt just past the 20-yard line and crossed ahead to Fernandez on the far right wing. Fernandez did the rest, beating the Lock Haven keeper by sailing a shot into the upper right corner of the net from 15 yards away to give the Fighting Scots a 1-0 advantage.
Fernandez now has 13 points on the season and 76 for her career, moving her just one point behind Angie de Almeida for fourth all-time in the Edinboro record books. Her 29 career goals are also one off a tie for fifth-most in Fighting Scots history.
Hartmann again factored into the scoring early in the second half. Following a long free kick from
Becca Costello, Hartmann scored her third goal of the season by pushing her shot just inside the post for a huge insurance score.
The Fighting Scots doubled up Lock Haven in shots with an 18-9 advantage, including a 14-6 edge during the second half. Kelly made three saves in goal for the shutout while Lock Haven goalie Dana Wozniak made seven stops.
Edinboro played Tuesday without head coach
Gary Kagiavas who remains hospitalized following injuries suffered in an automobile accident this past weekend. The match marked the first time Edinboro has played without Kagiavas, the only women's soccer head coach in school history, on the sidelines. Kagiavas had been at the helm for all of the team's matches over the course of its 16-year history – a span of 311 contests. Longtime assistant coach and former Fighting Scots standout
Jamie Sallie was appointed acting head coach by the University on Monday.
Next up is a return home on Saturday afternoon as Edinboro honors its seniors before a 1 p.m. meeting with Slippery Rock at Sox Harrison Stadium.
