MANSFIELD, Pa. (Oct. 27, 2012) – Two goals in the first 10 minutes propelled the Edinboro women's soccer team to a 4-1 victory over Mansfield on the regular season's final day.
The Fighting Scots improve to 12-3-2 overall and finish their conference slate at 9-3-2. Mansfield fell to 3-12-2 and 1-11-2 in the PSAC.
Edinboro wasted little time in taking control of the match, knowing it needed a win to maintain hopes for a home playoff match next week. The Scots got on the board at 2:26 when
Jenna Madison crossed from the 20-yard line to
Karisa Fernandez who headed it in from the six-yard box for the 1-0 lead. Fernandez now has nine goals on the season.
Just six minutes later, Fernandez served an assist to
Liz Debo whose shot from the right wing found the net and Edinboro had a pair of scores before the game was nine minutes old.
Mansfield would cut the lead in half with a goal from Alexis Getty in the 53rd minute, but it would be as close as the Mounties would get.
Nicole Dunlap registered her first goal for the Fighting Scots at 70:52 to give Edinboro the 3-1 lead. Debo tallied another goal of insurance on a breakaway in the 78th minute, finding the net from 15 yards out for her 14th goal of the year.
Meghan Kelly had a season-high 10 saves to earn the win in net for Edinboro. Mansfield's Alexis Wilhelm registered seven saves.
With the victory, Edinboro remains alive in the chase for a home playoff match next week. The Fighting Scots moved into a tie with Kutztown in the PSAC standings at 29 points apiece. Edinboro would hold the head-to-head tiebreaker against Kutztown given its 3-2 overtime win over the Golden Bears on Sept. 29. Edinboro must await the result of Sunday's match between Gannon and Mercyhurst before seedings are set, however, as Gannon enters its final match with 28 points. That match is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at Mercyhurst.
The PSAC Tournament is slated to begin on Tuesday, Oct. 30 weather permitting.
