Fighting Scots Edged By No. 21 California (Pa.), 2-1

EDINBORO, Pa. (Oct. 3, 2012) – No. 21 California (Pa.) broke a second half tie with a goal in the 80th minute to post a 2-1 victory over Edinboro in PSAC play on Wednesday night at Sox Harrison Stadium.
          
Bethany Smyda's shot from 13 yards out on the left wing was the deciding tally to help the Vulcans improve to 8-2-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the PSAC and drop Edinboro to 8-3-0, 5-3-0. Smyda's third goal of the season came off an assist from Kelsey Russo.
           
California scored the only tally of the first half with a goal from Janelle McCann at 12:16. McCann took a pass from Erin Hogan five yards out and beat the goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead. Edinboro proceeded to outshoot Cal during the first half, 12-8, but Vulcan net minder Ashley Magruda made six saves during the period to preserve the advantage.
           
Edinboro broke through at 65:41 on the second goal of the year by freshman Jansen Hartmann. Hartmann scored on the far left side from 20 yards out on a breakaway, pushing her shot past Magruda to tie things at 1-1.
           
The Vulcans had a strong opportunity to take the lead when Marissa Neifert shot high at 79:20. Thirty seconds later, Smyda scored the deciding goal.
           
Opportunities remained for the Fighting Scots. In the 81st minute, Allyson Overly had a shot blocked by the Vulcan defense. The best chance for a tying score came at the 85:48 mark. Following a California foul, senior Karisa Fernandez was awarded a penalty kick. Magruda was able to turn the shot away, however, and preserve the advantage.
           
Edinboro held the shots advantage, 20-15, during the match and applied pressure throughout, but the Vulcan defense was able to hold. Magruda made eight saves to earn the victory in net.
           
Meghan Kelly had five saves for Edinboro.
           
The Fighting Scots are off until Oct. 9 when they travel to Clarion as they continue PSAC action.
