CALIFORNIA, Pa. (Nov. 9, 2012) – Edinboro's second-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament resulted in the school's first match decided by penalty kicks where the fourth-seeded Fighting Scots came up short against No. 5 Slippery Rock, 4-2, in the Atlantic Region First Round.

The two teams fought to a 1-1 tie through regulation and a pair of overtime periods, forcing a shootout to decide which squad would advance in the regional bracket.

Edinboro, which entered the day ranked 24th in the nation, has its season end at 13-4-3. Slippery Rock (13-5-3) advances to play the top seed, California (Pa.) on Sunday at 2 p.m.

The Rock applied pressure throughout the day, holding a 23-13 edge in shots on the afternoon, and a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Shelby Ward drew the opening shot of the shootout and was able to find the net for a 1-0 lead. That tally was matched as Edinboro answered on a made attempt from Liz Debo. Following a made attempt by Rock's Emer Flatley, SRU goalkeeper Dana O'Neill was able to make the stop during the Scots' second round to take the advantage. Becca Costello was able to score for Boro in the third round following a Rock tally.

With Rock leading, 4-2, Edinboro needed a score to keep the shootout going, but O'Neill was able to dive to her right to stop the Scots' fourth attempt and send Rock on in the tournament.

Friday's match marked the first experience in a shootout situation in a college game while wearing red and white for all of Edinboro's players.

During regulation, Edinboro's defense was able to keep the match tight despite nearly constant pressure from Slippery Rock. The Rock's Lucy Hannon had the first good chance of the match in the 10th minute, but Edinboro goalkeeper Meghan Kelly was able to make the save on the near post to keep SRU off the board.

Both teams had opportunities to get the scoring started in the 22nd minute. First, Kelsey Knoll fired a shot off the crossbar to narrowly miss a goal. The Rock was able to clear the ball away, allowing Ward to slip behind the defense and have a great look of her own, but again Kelly was able to stand strong in net and deflect the shot away.

Edinboro had two more chances in the 29th minute as Amanda Bartell drilled a header that was saved by Rock keeper Dana O'Neill and 30 seconds later, Debo delivered another shot on goal that was also turned away by O'Neill.

The Rock finally cracked through in the 31st minute. Erin Storck was able to finish off a cross from Hannon for her first goal of the year and the first of the match for a 1-0 lead.

That lead would be extremely short-lived, however. Just over one minute later, Karisa Fernandez was able to slip behind The Rock defense with a spin move and went top right corner above the keeper to answer Slippery Rock's offense with an equalizer to tie the score at 1-1.

The teams took that tie into halftime, but Slippery Rock began applying pressure at the start of the second half by firing five shots in the first 15 minutes.

Slippery Rock continued to hound the Scots throughout the second period, but Edinboro's defense was able to hold time and again. The Rock countered with another excellent chance in the 70th minute as Steph Buckenheimer slapped a shot off the crossbar which hopped over the net.

Edinboro caught a break a short time later when it appeared as though The Rock had scored with just over 17 minutes remaining. The goal was waived off, however, as The Rock was called offside. Buckenheimer then hit the crossbar yet again in the 79th minute, but it bounded away harmlessly.

After 16 minutes without a shot, Edinboro finally tallied another in the 82nd minute, but Jansen Hartmann's attempt sailed high. As time dwindled in regulation, Fernandez fired wide in the 89th minute.

The Rock created the first opportunity of overtime as Ward was able to breakaway from the defense and fire on goal in the 93rd minute, but Kelly was able to make the stop. Knoll followed that with an attempt for the Scots one minute later, but her shot went wide left. Debo attacked again for Edinboro in the 99th minute by gaining an open look, but her shot attempt also flew left of the goal.

In the 102nd minute, Rock posed back-to-back challenges, first as Leslie Henny shot just under the crossbar where Kelly was able to make a leaping save. Seconds later, Hannon shot wide right to end another SRU threat and send the match to penalty kicks.

Meghan Kelly made six saves for Edinboro while O'Neill turned away three shots for The Rock.
