Fighting Scots Volleyball Team Upsets First-Place Clarion, 3-1

Box Score (New/Sortable Format) EDINBORO, Pa. (November 15, 2013) – The Edinboro volleyball team topped PSAC-West frontrunner Clarion by a score of 3-1 on Friday night at McComb Fieldhouse. The Fighting Scots dropped the first set, 25-20, but responded with three straight wins, (25-16, 25-20, 26-24) to capture the upset victory.

Edinboro improves to 17-18 on the year with an 8-13 mark in the PSAC. The Golden Eagles fell to 30-3 overall and 19-2 in conference action.  Clarion came into the game tied atop the PSAC West standings with California (Pa.).

After the Fighting Scots earned a 25-20 victory in the second set to gain a 2-1 set advantage over the Golden Eagles, Megan Branchick posted five kills in the fourth game to help Edinboro capture the 3-1 PSAC triumph. The fourth set featured six ties, with the Fighting Scots only relinquishing their lead once.  

Branchick led the Edinboro attack with 15 kills on the night, followed by 13 from Marah Maycock. Katie Felix dished out 33 assists to go along with 11 digs. Haley Marett posted a game-high 21 digs, while Tabitha Meeks added 14 and Maycock had 11 digs for the contest. Maria Concheck also recorded six block assists for the match.

Emily Stewart paced the Golden Eagles with 16 kills. Laura Subject had 34 assists and 11 digs on the night for Clarion.

The Fighting Scots recognized the career of lone senior Christina Furda prior to the contest. Furda has missed this entire 2013 season with an injury, but played in 27 matches last year for the Fighting Scots. She tallied 161 digs and 16 service aces in 2012 as a junior. Furda transferred to Edinboro from Division I Akron after the 2011 season. She appeared in 28 matches for the Zips, recording 138 digs and 38 assists in 2011.

Edinboro closes out the 2013 season Saturday afternoon, as it hosts Indiana (Pa.) at 3 p.m. at McComb Fieldhouse.
