nd minute,
Becca Costello's shot went off the post.
Liz Debo was able to put a shot on net right after but Shippensburg goalkeeper Shelbie Rackley made an incredible save. The Lady Raiders immediately went on the counter attack, leading to a Brooke Clippinger breakaway in which she hit the ball just wide. In the 76
th minute, Debo juked out a defender in the box to create a chance that was turned away on a save by Rackley. Less than a minute leader, another Debo shot went wide of the net.
Heading into overtime tied 0-0, the first ten-minute overtime period came and went with only one shot on goal, that coming from Edinboro. The second overtime period was not short on excitement, though. The Fighting Scots threatened early in the frame but Shippensburg controlled the final half of it, producing four shots. However, the Edinboro defense came up big, blocking three of those shots, including a momentous block by
Shannon Regan on a shot by Ashley Weaver that would have surely gone in the net otherwise.
Tied at 0-0 after 110 minutes, the two teams went into a shootout. The Fighting Scots gained an early 2-1 lead through two rounds after Debo and
Jansen Hartmann were each able to convert with low kicks to the left side.
The Lady Raiders evened things up in the third round of penalty kicks when Kaila Dautrich scored and Costello missed. The successful attempts continued in the next round when Danielle Nauman for Shippensburg and
Emilie Wetzig for Edinboro each scored. Shippensburg's Alyssa House was able to convert for the Lady Raiders in the final round. The Fighting Scots next called on Regan. Her attempt at the top right corner was knocked away by Rackley, moving Shippensburg into the semifinals.
"I thought we were pretty unlucky not to win," said Edinboro head coach
Gary Kagiavas. "I thought we had several opportunities to take care of business. Maybe we lacked a little bit of composure in front of the box, but I think we have the opportunity to build from where we are at right now."
Kagiavas said regarding the line-up that he used for the penalty kicks that he "took the most consistent kids who I thought were mentally able to handle it."
"We practiced it for two days," said Kagiavas. "Those were the most consistent kids. It's obviously difficult to make the pressure the same as it is in these games."
Edinboro finished the match with 20 shots, eight of them on goal. The Lady Raiders had 16 shots but were only able to test Fighting Scots goalkeeper
Meghan Kelly on two of those attempts. The shutout was her seventh of the year, which is a new school record.
The Fighting Scots must now await word on a potential NCAA Tournament playoff berth. The PSAC Tournament will continue on Friday, November 8
th. California (Pa.) will host the semi-final and final games. Shippensburg will play the Vulcans and West Chester defeated Kutztown 2-1 and awaits the winner of Slippery Rock and Gannon.
