Freeland Posts Double-Double as Edinboro Defeats Clarion 85-67 for Ninth Straight Win

(January 25, 2014) – Aignee' Freeland finished with 28 points and 12 rebounds as the Edinboro women's basketball team defeated Clarion 85-67 Saturday evening at Tippin Gymnasium. The victory is the Fighting Scots ninth in a row and advanced their record to 14-3 overall and 8-0 in the PSAC West. The Golden Eagles lost their fourth straight and dropped to 7-11 overall and 1-7 in conference.

Freeland shot 10-for-13 from the floor and 8-for-10 from the free throw line on her way to the 28 points. The double-double was her sixth of the season and second in a row. The sophomore forward added three steals and a pair of assists. Freeland was perfect from the floor in the second half, making all five of her shots and totaling 15 points in the final frame.

Edinboro led 39-35 at halftime. Coming out of the break, the Fighting Scots went on a 13-0 run to take a 52-35 lead with 16:13 to play. They went 7-for-8 from the free throw line during that stretch, four of those by Laurel Lindsay.

Clarion would immediately respond with an 8-0 run that was capped off by Hannah Heeter converting a classic three-point play to cut the lead to 52-43 with 14:41 remaining.

The Golden Eagles would not get any closer in the game, however. The Fighting Scots countered with a 15-4 run to take their first 20-point lead of the game. They were ahead 67-47 with 8:47 to play. The Fighting Scots would establish their largest lead of 25 points at 83-58 with a 9-0 run with 2:31 to go.

Edinboro led by as many as nine points in the fisrt half at 28-19 with 7:30 on the clock. The Scots used a 10-0 run that was fueled by two Lauren Hippo 3-pointers to build that margin.

Hippo finished the night with 19 points, 10 of which came in the first half. The sophomore forward played 15 minutes off the bench and shot 4-for-4 from the floor, two of those being 3-pointers, in the first half.

Darche' Jackson tallied 12 points and paced the team with seven assists. She was a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor while also pulling down four rebounds and adding two steals.

Valerie Majewski had another solid effort with 13 points, five assists and five steals.

Heeter had her fourth career double-double in five games against Edinboro. The junior forward finished with 17 points on 8-for-11 shooting and 10 rebounds. Kelly Johnson added 14 points, five assists, and four steals for the Golden Eagles.

The Fighting Scots shot a season-high 77.8 percent from the free throw line. They finished 21-for-27 at the line, the first time they scored over 20 points from the charity strike this season.

Edinboro shot 51.7 percent from the floor while Clarion was 45.9 percent shooting. The Fighting Scots outrebounded the Golden Eagles 37-30. They also forced 20 Clarion turnovers while committing 15 turnovers.

Edinboro's next game is at home against Davis & Elkins on Tuesday, January 28. The non-conference tilt is scheduled to tip-off at 7:00 p.m. in McComb Fieldhouse.

Game Notes: The Scots are now 12-0 when shooting a higher field goal percentage than the opposing team and 11-0 when leading at halftime… Nicole Johnson started for the first time since January 5 against Cheyney… The nine-game winning streak is tied for the fifth longest in school history.
