EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro volleyball team lost in a five-game thriller 3-2 to visiting Shippensburg (26-24, 15-25, 20-25, 25-23, 17-15), before sweeping Millersville 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-21) in the nightcap on Friday as part of a PSAC Crossover event at McComb Fieldhouse. The Fighting Scots moved to 15-6 overall and 7-4 in PSAC play with the split, while the Raiders improved to 10-9 and 4-6, and the Marauders fell to 9-10 and 3-8 in the conference on the season.
Sydney Trathen set a new career-high with
56 assists against Shippensburg.In the first match, after splitting the first four games with the Raiders, Edinboro jumped out to an 10-4 lead in the deciding fifth set. Shippensburg responded with a 11-5 run to knot the game at 15 apiece, before scoring two more consecutive points to seal the 3-2 match victory with an 11-4 run. The Fighting Scots fell despite owning advantages of 74-49 in total kills, 65-39 in assists and 81-71 in digs. The contest marked the fourth consecutive five-game meeting between the two teams.
Sydney Trathen set a new career-high with 56 assists, topping her previous high of 42 assists in a win over Walsh.
Tabitha Meeks led five Fighting Scots with a season-high 17 kills, followed by
Jen Gruber with 15,
Marah Maycock with 13,
Latoya Hutchinson with 12 and
Maria Concheck with 10 kills.
Haley Marett fronted the Edinboro defense with 26 digs.
Annie Goerl led Shippensburg with 16 kills, while Maura Nolan and Laura Plank recorded game-highs of 38 assists and 20 digs, respectively. Taylor Gotschall added eight blocks for Shippensburg.
In the ladder game, Gruber tallied a game-high 12 kills, her eighth game of recording at least 10 kills this season.
Katie Felix dished out a season-high 31 assists to lead all players, while Marett paced the Fighting Scots with 11 digs.
Brooklyn Smith posted a game-high 18 digs for the Marauders.
Edinboro returns to action tomorrow in day two of the PSAC Crossover event, hosting Pitt-Johnstown at 10 a.m. and Lock Haven at 6 p.m. at McComb Fieldhouse.
