Edinboro Rallies for Pair of Five-Game Victories over Pitt-Johnstown, Lock Haven

EDINBORO, Pa. – Facing a two-game deficit twice in a pair of PSAC Crossover matches on Saturday, the Edinboro women's volleyball team rallied for two thrilling 3-2 victories over visiting Pitt-Johnstown (25-27, 20-25, 26-24, 25-20)  and Lock Haven (23-25, 23-25, 25-16, 25-22, 20-18) at McComb Fieldhouse. Edinboro improved to 17-6 overall and 9-4 in PSAC play with the sweep. The Mountain Cats fell to 10-7 and 6-6, while the Lady Eagles dropped to 13-8 and 7-6 in the conference. The matches were part of a PSAC Crossover event hosted by Edinboro.

The Fighting Scots first fell behind 2-0 to Lock Haven in the second match by identical scores of 25-23, before Edinboro clawed back with 25-16 and 25-22 triumphs in the third and fourth games to even the contest at 2-2.

In the fifth and deciding set, trailing 14-13 and facing match point, Edinboro once again staved off elimination with the help of a kill and block by Maria Concheck, giving the Fighting Scots a 15-14 advantage.

Edinboro would avoid elimination on two more occasions, the ladder instance tying the match at 18 apiece. Katie Felix then notched a service ace to put the Fighting Scots on top 19-18, before Sydney Trathen's kill sealed the second comeback 3-2 victory of the day for Edinboro with a 20-18 triumph in game five.

Tabitha Meeks paced the Fighting Scots with 18 kills, followed by Latoya Hutchinson and Marah Maycock with 15 and 12 kills, respectively. Trathen recorded a team-high 41 assists. Haley Marett led all players with 31 digs, while Maycock added 24 digs on the night.

Sarah Gomish led the Lady Eagles with 17 kills and Jessica Brown posted a game-high 48 assists.

In the early game, after Pitt-Johnstown moved out to a two-game lead, the Fighting Scots responded with 26-24 and 25-20 victories in the next two sets to even the score at two games apiece. Edinboro scored 12 of its 15 points in the fifth set on kills, including four from Hutchinson, besting Pitt-Johnstown 15-12 to earn the 3-2 win.

Meeks led the Fighting Scots' attack with a season-high 19 kills, while Jen Gruber and Hutchinson each tallied 16 kills. Gruber also notched 23 digs in the win.
Edinboro matched a season-high with 74 kills against Pitt-Johnstown.

Felix dished out a career-high 59 assists, topping her previous high of 48 assists, a feat she accomplished twice in her career. Marett recorded a game-high 37 digs, as well.

Kendall Mahony and Devan Orr posted team-highs of 19 kills and 36 digs for the Mountain Cats.

The Fighting Scots posted a 7-1 record against PSAC Eastern Division foes with the pair of wins on Saturday.

Edinboro returns to action on Wednesday, October 15 hosting Ursuline at 7 p.m. at McComb Fieldhouse.
