EDINBORO, Pa. (October 14, 2014) - The Edinboro women's soccer team saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end on Tuesday night when the Fighting Scots lost 2-1 in double overtime to Roberts Wesleyan. Bella Mitrevski scored both goals to push the Redhawks record to 7-6-0. Edinboro falls to 7-5-1 overall.
The Fighting Scots had the first quality scoring chance in the 21st minute. The Redhawks turned it over in the middle of the field on Edinboro's attacking end directly to
Liz Debo. Debo fumbled around with the ball which resulted in
Ashley Mutkus taking possession. The freshman forward took a hard shot from the top of the box which was saved by Marissa Sell.
Becca Costello tied the team lead with three shots.Edinboro had another chance in the 25th minute.
Alex Brown passed it to Debo for a one-timer near the top right corner of the box that sailed high.
The Fighting Scots final opportunity of the half came when
Jansen Hartmann booted a corner into the box that
Lauralee Clements got a foot on but was blocked. The deflection went out to
Coleen Brodman at the top of the box who shot it high.
Mitrevski struck early in the second half. Heaven Palamitia passed it to the sophomore midfielder who skipped it across the ground into the lower left side of the net to take a 1-0 lead in the 50
th minute.
Edinboro had a chance in the 65
th minute.
Becca Costello played the ball forward to Brown on the left wing who then tried to center it to
Alexis Becker but the ball narrowly trickled by and went out of bounds.
Brown found the back of the net in the 78
th minute. Mutkus delivered a hard shot on net which Sell had to dive to stop. The Redhawks goalkeeper was unable to corral the shot though and the ball sat right in front of the goal line. Brown came in and finished the play off to tie the game at 1-1. It was the sophomore forward's 10
th career goal as she became just the 21
st player in school history to reach that mark.
The Fighting Scots almost avoided overtime. Hartmann passed it to Costello in the box in the 83
rd minute and the senior defender/midfielder missed wide.
Ashley Mutkus hard shot in the 78th
minute led to Alex Brown's goal. The first overtime period saw a limited number of openings. Costello received a pass from Debo in the 93
rd minute and played it up to the top of the box. The Erie, Pa. native struck a hard shot at the upper right corner of the net but Sell made another diving effort and tipped it over the goal.
Roberts Wesleyan tallied the game-winner in the 106
th minute. The two teams exchanged turnovers and Mitrevski received the ball in the middle of the field. She buried the opportunity in the top right of the goal for her ninth goal of the season in seven games.
Edinboro outshot Roberts Wesleyan 16-9 in the game with six on net compared to four for the Redhawks.
The loss ended Edinboro's seven-game winning streak. That streak was tied for the longest in school history that the 2007 team also accomplished. The two goals by the Redhawks also ended a streak of nine straight games of allowing one goal or less. The only other team in school history with such a streak was the 2007 team.
The Fighting Scots will host Mansfield on Saturday, October 18. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. at Sox Harrison Stadium. Senior Day activities will occur before the game as the team honors eight seniors.
