EDINBORO, Pa. – Eight seniors were recognized prior to Edinboro's match with Mansfield at Sox Harrison Stadium on Saturday. The eight seniors recognized were
Ivonne Aguilar,
Lauralee Clements,
Becca Costello,
Liz Debo,
Ashley DeVito,
Brittani Genco,
Meghan Kelly, and
Allyson Overly. Debo then went and celebrated by breaking the school record for career goals, although she was ultimately upstaged by freshman
Ashley Mutkus in the 6-3 victory.
The contest continued Edinboro's resurgence from a poor start to the 2014 campaign, as the Fighting Scots remained alive in the chase for an fourth straight PSAC playoff berth. Edinboro is now 8-5-1 overall and 8-4-1 in league play. The loss dropped Mansfield to 3-10-1 overall and 2-10-1 in the PSAC.
Debo (7) watches as her record-setting 38th career goal
goes into the net.Debo tied the school record of 37 career goals scored set by assistant coach
Jamie Sallie (formerly Tekotte) in the fifth minute of the match.
Alex Brown assisted on the goal. Just over ten minutes later the senior forward broke the goals record when she netted her sixth of the season at the 15:07 mark on a breakaway off a beautiful long pass from fellow senior Costello. Debo now has 84 career points, six shy of the career record of 90 points held by Nicole Vlahovic.
Debo's second goal actually made the score 4-0, as freshman
Ashley Mutkus scored two goals in between Debo's goals. Mutkus' first goal came at 11:56 with Brown also assisting, as she headed in a crossing pass from Brown. Less than two minutes later she found the back of the net again, with
Jansen Hartmann assisting at 13:30. It was another long pass that Mutkus shot between the goalkeeper's legs.
Mutkus would record her first career hat trick when she scored her third goal of the match and fifth of the season to make it 5-0 at the 24:29 mark. Brown again assisted for her third of the match.
Not long after that head coach
Gary Kagiavas subbed out all ten starters, leaving only senior
Meghan Kelly in goal. Edinboro led 5-0 at the half and held a 10-2 advantage in shots.
The Boro lead would grow to 6-0 at 57:35 when Mutkus scored her fourth goal of the match to tie the school record for goals in a game. The record had stood for many years, with Alyssa Murosky scoring four goals against LaRoche on September 3, 1997 in a 12-1 victory.
Mutkus (5) shoots in one of her four goals, tying a school
record for most goals in a game.It was the first time since 2010 that the Fighting Scots tallied six goals or more in a contest. Edinboro defeated Wheeling Jesuit 7-0 the last time it happened.
Meghan Kelly played 80 minutes in the contest which was enough for her to become the first goalkeeper in school history to play over 6000 minutes. She now has played 6036 minutes and today's victory was her 39
th career win.
Edinboro, ranked seventh in the latest NSCAA Atlantic region rankings, is back in action on Wednesday, October 22. The Fighting Scots will host Slippery Rock in a 6 p.m. match at Sox Harrison Stadium. The Rock is 24
