EDINBORO, Pa. (October 22, 2014) - The Edinboro women's soccer team dropped a close match to Slippery Rock on Wednesday night, conceding the lone goal in the 88
th minute to lose 1-0. The loss drops the Fighting Scots to 8-6-1 overall this season and 8-5-1 in the PSAC while The Rock improves to 10-3-1 overall and 9-3-1 in conference.
Both teams entered the game tied for fifth in the PSAC and played each other even throughout. Edinboro had multiple chances in the first half to get on the board.
Liz Debo delivered a pass to
Alex Brown in the ninth minute but Annabelle Hegeman made the save.
Alex Brown nearly scored nine minutes
into the game.The Rock would have a chance in the 17
th minute when Nicole Krueger streaked down the sideline and sent a pass to the middle of the field to a sliding Andrea Felix that missed the ball by inches and ultimately went out of bounds.
Debo had a good opportunity at the end of the opening frame. The senior forward took a shot in the 41
st minute that was kept out by Hegeman. Edinboro held a halftime shot advantage of 9-6.
Slippery Rock held the shot advantage in the second half and capitalized in the waning minutes. The Rock got multiple players into the box in the 88
th minute and a shot rebounded back to Caitlin Binder. Binder made the most of her opportunity and put the ball into the right side of the net for the game-winner.
Debo paced the way for the Scots with four shots and was key in setting up other chances for Edinboro.
Meghan Kelly made four saves on the evening bumping her career total to 278, the second most in school history.
The loss drops Edinboro to sixth in the conference with 25 points. The Fighting Scots are still in a good position to make the PSAC Tournament as they need to win just win one of their final two conference games and have Millersville lose a game in order to get in. The top eight teams in the conference make the tournament.
Tonight's game was also the Fighting Scots Fighting Cancer night. They wore alternate pink jerseys and collected donations towards the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Edinboro travels to take on California (Pa.) on Saturday afternoon. That game is scheduled to take begin at 3:00 p.m. The Vulcans are third in the PSAC, fourth in the NSCAA Atlantic Regional Rankings, and receiving votes in the National Coaches' Poll.
