Edinboro Ties California (Pa.) 1-1 to Stay in PSAC Tournament Hunt

CALIFORNIA, Pa. (October 25, 2014) - One-hundred and ten minutes was not enough to determine a winner between Edinboro and California (Pa.) on Saturday afternoon as the final score was 1-1. The Fighting Scots move to 8-6-2 overall and 8-5-2 in conference while the Vulcans are now 11-2-3 overall and 10-2-2 in the PSAC. Today was also Cal's Senior Day as they honored eight seniors before the game.

Edinboro scored the first goal of the game with under 10 minutes to play in a competitive first half. Jansen Hartmann netted her sixth goal of the season off a pass from Ashley Mutkus inside the box. The junior midfielder gave the Fighting Scots a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute. The Scots held a first half shot advantage of nine to seven.

California (Pa.) tied the game less than two minutes into the second half. Janelle McCann beat a Scots defender and scored at the 46:59 mark to tie the game at 1-1.

Neither team was able to tally a goal with the remaining time in the second half. The Vulcans had eight shots in the second half while the Fighting Scots had six.

The first overtime period was quiet for the first seven minutes until each team fired off two shots apiece in the closing minutes but all four shots failed to find the net.

The Vulcans were the only team to take a shot in a quiet second overtime period. McCann delivered the only shot on net coming in the 103rd minute.

Hartmann now has six goals and 17 points this season, both career-highs. The junior midfielder/forward broke a tie for 14th place for career goals as she now has 14. Hartmann also improves to 42 career points, moving into a tie with Becca Costello for 12th in school history.

Edinboro now has accumulated 26 points, currently sixth in the PSAC. The Fighting Scots will clinch a PSAC Tournament berth if Millersville loses to Lock Haven on Saturday night. If the Marauders win or tie, then the Fighting Scots can still clinch a postseason appearance on Tuesday, October 25 when they travel to Kutztown for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff. A win or tie against the Golden Bears would put Edinboro into the PSAC Tournament.

The Fighting Scots can make the PSAC Tournament in other scenarios as well. If Gannon loses or ties either of its last two contests, Edinboro will make the conference playoffs. If Indiana (Pa.) loses out then the Scots would make the PSAC Tournament.
