Fighting Scots Clinch PSAC Tournament Berth with 2-1 Upset of No. 18 Kutztown

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (October 28, 2014) - Alex Brown and Reilee DuPratt played the role of heroines on Tuesday afternoon, each scoring second half goals to lead the Edinboro women's soccer team to a 2-1 upset of No. 18 Kutztown. The victory clinched a spot in the PSAC Tournament for the Fighting Scots for the fifth straight year. They improve to 9-6-2 overall and a 9-5-2 PSAC record while the Golden Bears' nine-game winning streak comes to an end as they fall to 12-4 overall and 11-4 in conference play. Edinboro was ranked seventh in the NSCAA Atlantic Regional rankings entering the contest while Kutztown was third in the region.

The back and forth affair was tied 0-0 as the two teams began the second half. Three minutes into the second half, Kutztown received a break. Edinboro was called for a hand ball in the box which led to a penalty kick for the Golden Bears. Megan Frailer buried the opportunity for Kutztown to take a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute.

Edinboro nearly tied the game in the 63rd minute. With Kutztown goalie Deanna Messner out of position, Edinboro had two chances on net. Both Allyson Overly and Ashely DeVito were turned away by Golden Bear defenders to preserve the 1-0 advantage.

DuPratt would break through in the 78th minute. The junior defender scored on an assist from Brown to knot the game up at 1-1. It was DuPratt's first career goal.

Edinboro would take the lead just three minutes later. Overly snapped off a shot that hit the crossbar and rebounded to the feet of Brown. The sophomore forward put the ball into the back of the net to secure the victory for Edinboro.

The Fighting Scots took 17 shots in the game with 12 on net compared to 12 shots for the Golden Bears and five on net. Messner made 10 saves for Kutztown while Meghan Kelly stopped four for Edinboro.

This was Alex Brown's first career game in which she scored a goal and had an assist. The Bay Village, Ohio native now has 11 career goals, good for 17th in school history.

The victory for Kelly extends her school record to 40 wins as she becomes the first goalkeeper in school history to reach 40. The next closest in the record books is Kate Stukbauer with 25 wins.

The group of seniors becomes the first four-year group in school history to make the PSAC Tournament in all four seasons. The six four-year seniors are Lauralee Clements, Becca Costello, Liz Debo, DeVito, Kelly, and Overly.

Edinboro now waits to see who they will face in the postseason. The Fighting Scots will finish in either sixth or seventh place depending on how Indiana (Pa.) finishes the year. The Crimson Hawks play Gannon tonight and Mercyhurst on Saturday, November 1. If IUP loses or ties either of those games, then Edinboro will be the sixth seed.

The Fighting Scots still have one game left in the regular season on Saturday. Edinboro travels to face Notre Dame (Ohio) in a non-conference tilt. The Falcons are ranked sixth in the region and hold an 11-1-2 overall record. That match is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
