EDINBORO, Pa. (Oct. 17, 2014) – Edinboro hosted first place Clarion on Friday night in a key PSAC women's volleyball match, with the Golden Eagles edging the Fighting Scots in four games. Clarion prevailed by scores of 30-28, 25-22, 18-25, and 25-20 to improve to 21-2 overall and 13-1 in the PSAC West. Edinboro falls to 18-7 and 9-5, respectively.
The first two games were extremely tight, with Edinboro holding a 24-22 lead in the first game only to see Clarion come back with a pair of points. Edinboro served for the match on two other occasions but could not record the winning point. A
Maria Concheck kill knotted the match at 28-28, but Clarion would register the next two points.
Game number two was played in a similar fashion, with the Fighting Scots holding a slim 20-19 lead before Clarion ran off three straight points. A kill by
Latoya Hutchinson pulled the Scots to within 23-22, but the Golden Eagles made it 2-0 with two straight points.
The Scots narrowed the gap to 2-1 with a strong third game. They jumped out to a 15-10 lead, saw Clarion pull to within 19-16, then outscored the Golden Eagles 6-2 the rest of the way.
Edinboro trailed early in the fourth game before pulling even at 12-12. It was still tied at 16-16 when the Golden Eagles ran off back-to-back points. An Edinboro point made it 18-17, but Clarion responded with the next three points to make it 21-17. Edinboro never got closer than three points the rest of the way, with a kill by Mackenzie Biggs wrapping up the victory for Clarion.
Marah Maycock paced the Fighting Scots with 16 kills, adding 20 digs.
Tabitha Meeks contributed 12 kills and
Jen Gruber 11.
Sydney Trathen finished with 28 assists and 18 digs, with
Katie Felix adding 20 assists.
Haley Marett recorded 25 digs and Concheck had 2 block solos and 4 block assists.
Carlie Bieranowski led Clarion with 18 kills, while Laura Subject had 44 assists. Morgan Seybold had 27 digs.
Edinboro returns to action with another PSAC match on Saturday afternoon, hosting Indiana(Pa.). That match gets underway at 1 p.m. at McComb Fieldhouse.
