EDINBORO, Pa. –The Edinboro volleyball team's fifth-game rally fell short on Friday night, as visiting Gannon edged the Fighting Scots by a score of 3-2 (13-25, 25-20, 21-25, 25-20, 18-16) in a PSAC Western Division contest at McComb Fieldhouse. Edinboro fell to 19-8 overall and 10-6 in PSAC play with the loss, while the Lady Knights improved to 21-2 and 14-2, respectively.
Trailing 14-10 and facing match point in the fifth and final set, the Fighting Scots scored five consecutive points to take a 15-14 lead fueled by two kills by
Latoya Hutchinson.
Gannon responded with two straight points to regain a 16-15 advantage, before a Lady Knight ball handling error evened the score at 16 apiece.
However, Gannon would tack on two consecutive points to seal the 18-16 set victory and 3-2 match triumph.
Maria Concheck paced the Fighting Scots with season-highs of 14 kills and a .550 hitting percentage. Hutchinson and
Tabitha Meeks each tallied 11 kills each, while
Sydney Trathen dished out 43 assists to go along with 16 digs and four block assists.
Haley Marett recorded a team-high 28 digs and
Marah Maycock posted 20 digs and three service aces.
Hannah Kren contributed a game-high 16 kills and a team-high 28 digs, while Megan Wendel recorded a game-high 45 assists.
Edinboro returns to action tomorrow, hosting local rival Mercyhurst at 1 p.m. at McComb Fieldhouse. The contest marks the Fighting Scots' annual "Dig for a Cure" match, as Edinboro will wear pink jerseys to raise breast cancer awareness. The Fighting Scots volleyball program will also hold a Chinese auction during the game with the proceeds benefiting the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
