CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Edinboro volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-23) decision at the hands of California (Pa.) in a PSAC road contest on Saturday afternoon in California, Pa. The Fighting Scots move to 13-5 overall and 6-3 in conference play with the loss, while the Vulcans boosted their record to 13-5 and 7-2 on the season.
Trailing 23-13 in the first set, Edinboro went on a 10-1 run to cut the California lead to 24-23. However, the Vulcans overcame the Fighting Scot rally, as a Miranda Fouzie kill sealed the 25-23 win for California to take a 1-0 lead.
In the second game, Edinboro owned a 14-9 lead after a Vulcan service error, before California outscored the Fighting Scots 16-4 for the remainder of the set to gain a 2-0 advantage with a 25-18 victory.
Facing match point at 24-18 in the third set, Edinboro rattled off five consecutive points, including two kills by
Latoya Hutchinson to cut the Vulcan lead to 24-23. Unfortunately for the Fighting Scots, this late rally was not enough as a Danielle Hayes kill gave California the 25-23 set win and the 3-0 PSAC victory.
California edged the Fighting Scots in total kills 37-35, in assists by a total of 35-30 and in digs 60-56.
Jen Gruber led the Edinboro attack with nine kills.
Sydney Trathen dished out a team-high 14 assists.
Challen Litwiler and
Haley Marett paced the Fighting Scots with 13 digs apiece, followed by
Katie Felix with 11 digs. Felix also added 12 assists on the day.
Laurel Miller led the Vulcans with nine kills, while Hayes recorded eight kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Megan Litoborski posted game-highs of 28 assists and 17 digs in the win.
Edinboro returns to action on Tuesday, travelling to Daemen for a non-conference battle. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m. in Amherst, N.Y.
