GREENSBURG, Pa. (November 19, 2014) -
Aignee' Freeland scored 25 points and pulled down 17 rebounds as the Edinboro women's basketball team held off Seton Hill on the road Wednesday night for a 68-57 victory. This was the PSAC opener for each team as the Fighting Scots improve to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the PSAC while the Griffins fall to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference. Edinboro entered the game ranked sixth in the nation in the WBCA/USA Today Sports Coaches' Poll.
Edinboro trailed 6-0 to begin the game and failed to make a field goal until 13:51 remaining in the first half when Freeland got the Scots on the board. The basket quickly sparked a 7-2 Edinboro run to tie the game at 10 with 11:43 left in the opening frame.
Tied at 16 with fewer than 10 minutes to play in the half, the Fighting Scots pieced together an 8-0 run with four of those points coming from
Hope Mancini. Edinboro led 26-18 with 5:07 left in the half.
This was Stan Swank's 600th
career victory.Seton Hill consistently battled back to remain in one possession and trailed 31-26 with 2:29 showing on the clock in the first half. Freeland pushed her first half total to 15 points with 47 seconds left to give Edinboro a 33-28 halftime lead.
The Griffins shot 11-for-27 (40.7 percent) from the field compared to 11-for-33 (33.3 percent) for the Fighting Scots at halftime, but Edinboro went 4-for-9 (44.4 percent) on 3-pointers compared to 0-for-6 from Seton Hill.
After Kelly Brennan opened the second half with the first points for Seton Hill to close the gap to 33-30, Edinboro went on a 9-0 run with six points coming from Freeland. The Fighting Scots led 42-30 with just over 15 minutes to play and would maintain a nine-point lead or greater the rest of the way.
Freeland finished the night shooting 9-for-16 as she collected her first double-double of the season and 19
th of her career. The 25 points marked the eighth time she eclipsed 20 points in a game. The junior forward/center now has 551 career rebounds, two shy of surpassing Shauna Nevel for 17
th in school history. The only time in her career Freeland had more rebounds was two years ago against Lock Haven when she collected 18 rebounds.
Laurel Lindsay struggled in the first half going 0-for-4 from the field with three fouls. The guard/forward scored 14 points in the second half on 5-for-7 shooting and didn't commit a single foul.
This was the first time this season Mancini did not lead the Fighting Scots in scoring this season, but she did finish with 12 points on 3-for-11 from the field and 3-for-7 on 3-pointers. The graduate student tied a career-high with five assists which was tied for the team lead with Lindsay in the game.
Lauren Hippo finished with 11 points on 4-for-11 shooting and 3-for-7 from beyond the arc. It was the 17
th time in the past two seasons that the junior guard/forward scored in double figures. Edinboro has a 16-1 record when she reaches that mark over that span.
Maggie Moore played a key role off the bench for the Fighting Scots. She registered career-highs with six points on 3-for-5 shooting and 19 minutes played. The sophomore forward also pulled down four rebounds, one shy of her career-high that she set in the last outing against Virginia-Wise.
Valerie Majewski once again sat out the game. The 2014 WBCA All-American and PSAC West Athlete of the Year has missed the opening three games of the season for Edinboro.
Seton Hill received a double-double from Chelsea Apke. The graduate student guard/forward finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds in 28 minutes of action, the only Griffin to play over 22 minutes.
Jenna Kaufman was a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor and 3-for-3 on free throws to lead Seton Hill with 13 points.
The Griffins outshot the Fighting Scots from the field hitting 23-for-56 (41.1 percent) compared to the Scots 24-for-62 (38.7 percent), but Edinboro finished 6-for-17 (35.3 percent) on 3-pointers compared to 1-for-14 (7.1 percent) for Seton Hill.
Seton Hill outrebounded Edinboro 40-37 despite Freeland's presence.
The Fighting Scots have now won 10 consecutive road PSAC games.

th with Edinboro. He is closing in on becoming the first coach in PSAC history to win 500 games at the Division II level.
The Fighting Scots return home for its PSAC home opener against California (Pa.) on Saturday, November 22. Edinboro will be looking to avenge an 80-55 loss from the last time the two teams played in McComb Fieldhouse. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
