Fighting Scots Lose Home Opener 76-48 to California (Pa.)

EDINBORO, Pa. (November 22, 2014) - The Edinboro women's basketball team struggled in the first half of its home opener on Saturday afternoon to California (Pa.) en route to a 76-48 loss. The Vulcans outscored the Fighting Scots 40-14 at the break and handed the Scots their largest home loss since losing 81-52 to Millersville in 2002-03. Edinboro entered the game ranked sixth in the WBCA/USA Today Sports Coaches' Poll and falls to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the PSAC West. California (Pa.) improves to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the PSAC West.

The Vulcans built their first half lead beginning at the 15:23 mark. Emma Mahady made a 3-pointer that was followed by a made 3-pointer from Miki Glenn. Lana Doran capped off an 8-0 run that put Cal up 13-3 with 13:58 remaining in the first half. The Vulcans would lead by double-digits for the rest of the game beginning at 13:07 to play in the opening frame.
California (Pa.) closed the first half on a 15-1 run with six points from Glenn to lead 40-14 at the break.

Edinboro shot 6-for-28 (21.4 percent) from the field in the first half compared to 15-for-32 for the Vulcans (46.9 percent). Entering the game ranked first in the PSAC in 3-pointers made and 3-point percentage, the Fighting Scots failed to make a shot from beyond the arc in the first half, going 0-for-6. Cal made 2-of-9 shots (22.2 percent) from deep in the initial 20 minutes.

The Fighting Scots were more competitive in the second half, shooting 13-for-31 (41.9 percent) from the field and 4-for-10 on 3-pointers (40.0 percent).

Edinboro shot 19-for-59 (32.2 percent) for the game. It was the Scots worst shooting percentage from the floor since February 20, 2013 at Indiana (Pa.) when they shot 18-for-55 (32.7 percent) in a 57-45 win.

Hope Mancini led the Fighting Scots in scoring for the third time this season. She was the only Edinboro player to reach double figures with 11 points on 5-for-14 shooting.

Laurel Lindsay neared a double-double scoring eight points and pulling down 11 rebounds, one shy of her career-high set against Bloomsburg during the 2012-13 campaign.

Alexis Bowen scored a career-high nine points.

Alexis Bowen posted career-highs across the board. The redshirt freshman appearing in her second career game finished with nine points on 3-for-6 from the floor including 2-for-4 on 3-pointers in 23 minutes. Lily Hospers five points and four rebounds off the bench were also career-highs.

California (Pa.) finished the game shooting 29-for-62 (46.8 percent) and 5-for-14 on 3-pointers (35.7 percent). The Vulcans had three in double figures and were led by Glenn. The sophomore guard scored 20 points on 6-for-8 shooting and a perfect 3-for-3 on 3-pointers and 5-for-5 from the free throw line. Glenn also added five steals, four rebounds, and three assists while playing all 40 minutes. Mahady added 15 points and seven rebounds while Irina Kukolj finished with 14 poitns and eight rebounds.

Edinboro still holds a 42-35 advantage in the series all-time, but California (Pa.) has won three of the last four contests.

The Fighting Scots now travel to Bloomsburg on Tuesday night in a rematch of the Atlantic Regional Championship. Edinboro won that contest 82-76 to advance to the Elite Eight. Although each team is a PSAC member, this game will not count towards the conference records. Tip-off for that game is at 5:30 p.m.
