BLOOMSBURG, Pa. (November 25, 2014) - The No. 11 Edinboro women's basketball team suffered a poor shooting night on Tuesday evening in a 59-49 loss at No. 20 Bloomsburg in a non-conference game. The Fighting Scots shot 15-for-50 (30.0 percent) and turned the ball over 25 times. Edinboro falls to 3-2 overall while the Huskies improve to 3-1 overall.
The Fighting Scots opened the game on an 8-2 run with 3-pointers from
Hope Mancini and
Laurel Lindsay to open the contest. Bloomsburg responded with a 12-2 run to take a 14-10 lead with 9:02 remaining in the first half.
Edinboro kept the score close the rest of the first half, including tying the game at 20 off another Mancini 3-pointer with 2:37 to play in the opening frame. The Huskies closed the half on a 7-2 run. Following an Edinboro missed shot Taylor Maldonado beat the buzzer with a layup and one second on the clock to give the Huskies a 27-22 halftime advantage.
Both teams shot poorly in the first half. Edinboro went 7-for-28 (25.0 percent) while Bloomsburg shot 10-for-28 (35.7 percent). The Fighting Scots had 12 turnovers compared to the Huskies 10.
Edinboro trailed by just three at 35-32 with 10:04 left in the game following a
Bri'ana Cook layup. The Fighting Scots had kept it within two possessions until a 12-0 run by Bloomsburg. The Huskies held the Scots scoreless for nearly three minutes while making all six of their shots in that span. Maldonado scored six points during the run that increased the Huskies lead to 47-32 with 7:20 to play. Edinboro trailed by at least eight points the rest of the game.
Lindsay led the Scots with 16 points on 4-for-8 from the floor and 4-for-6 on 3-pointers. The four 3-pointers moves the guard/forward into ninth place all-time with 96 career 3-pointers made, passing Renee' Brown. Lindsay added six rebounds and four assists while playing all 40 minutes.
Aignee' Freeland was the only other Edinboro player to score in double figures. The junior forward/center finished with 10 points on 4-for-9 from the floor and six rebounds.
Sadowski and Maldonado were the only two Huskies to break double digits. Sadowski neared a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds while Maldonado scored 10 points.
The 30.0 field goal percentage was the Fighting Scots worst since shooting 29.6 percent (21-for-71) at Clarion on February 2, 2013 in a 56-55 loss and the 25 turnovers were their most since they committed 25 turnovers at Bloomsburg in a losing effort 84-59 on December 2, 2012.
With today's loss and Saturday's 76-48 loss to California (Pa.) last Saturday this is the first time Edinboro has lost back-to-back games since the end of the 2012-13 season. That season they were knocked out of the PSAC Tournament by Bloomsburg 76-73 and then lost to the Vulcans 80-72 in the Atlantic Regional.
It was also the first time the Fighting Scots failed to break 50 points in consecutive games since the 2004-05 season when they lost on the road 59-49 at California (Pa.) and then 55-45 at Indiana (Pa.)
Edinboro now has more than a week off before returning to action on December 3 at Slippery Rock. That game is scheduled to take place at 6:00 p.m. next Wednesday.
