Edinboro Drops Third Straight Game, Suffers 66-57 Loss at Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (December 3, 2014) - The Edinboro women's basketball team lost at Slippery Rock on Wednesday night 66-57. Slippery Rock used a 17-0 first half run to seize a lead that was not relinquished the rest of the game. The Fighting Scots have now lost three straight for the first time since the 2009-10 season and lost to The Rock for the first time in their last 11 contests.  Edinboro falls to 3-3 overall this season and 1-2 in the PSAC West while Slippery Rock improves to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in conference.

Edinboro held the lead for most of the first half including jumping out to a 17-9 lead with 6:58 to play. The Rock scored their 17 unanswered points from the 5:10 mark in the first half until 18 seconds left in the opening frame when Maggie Moore scored to make it 30-21 at halftime. Slippery Rock went 5-for-8 from the field including 6-for-9 on free throws in the last 5:10 of the first half while Edinboro shot 1-for-6 from the field with six turnovers.

Slippery Rock shot 9-for-23 (39.1 percent) while Edinboro shot 9-for-33 (27.3 percent) in the first half. The Fighting Scots did force 15 turnovers while only committing 11 but took just two first half free throws while The Rock had 17 trips to the free throw line.

The Fighting Scots battled back in the second half. They trailed by only a point on two occasions within a minute of each other. Aignee' Freeland made back-to-back shots off passes from Laurel Lindsay and then Lindsay assisted Valerie Majewski on a 3-pointer for a 7-2 run to make it 44-43 with 10:21 left in the second half. Erica Aiello responded with a layup at the other end 16 seconds later but Freeland scored again to bring the deficit back down to one point, trailing 46-45 with 9:46 to play.

Edinboro made one shot from the field until the final minute of the game. Slippery Rock went on a 16-8 over that span to lead 62-53 with 1:08 remaining.

The Fighting Scots shot 21-for-66 (31.8 percent) compared to 20-for-45 (44.4 percent) for The Rock. Edinboro, who entered the game ranked first in the PSAC in 3-point field goal percentage at 41.0 percent, went 4-for-23 (17.4 percent) on 3-point attempts in this game. That was the lowest 3-point percentage for the Scots since shooting 2-for-13 (15.4 percent) against East Stroudsburg on December 18, 2013. Slippery Rock shot 2-for-6 (33.3 percent) on 3-pointers.

The Rock held an advantage at the free throw line, shooting 24-for-34 at the charity stripe compared to 11-for-17 for the Fighting Scots. The last time an opponent visited the free throw line that many times was on December 1, 2012 against Mansfield when the Mounties took 36 free throw attempts.

Slippery Rock outrebounded Edinboro 43-33. The Fighting Scots have not outrebounded an opponent all season.

Majewski made her season debut for the Fighting Scots. The 2014 WBCA All-American played 37 minutes and shot 6-for-11 from the floor including 2-for-5 on 3-pointers for 15 points. She also managed four steals.

Lindsay led Edinboro in scoring with 17 points. The graduate student shot a career-high 17 field goal attempts and seven 3-point attempts. She added six rebounds, six assists, and three steals.

Freeland was the only other Edinboro player in double figures. The junior forward/center finished with 12 points and six rebounds.

D'Asia Chambers led Slippery Rock with a double-double. The senior guard/forward scored 27 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.

Taylor Siggers and Aiello each contributed 12 points for The Rock. Siggers also supplied seven rebounds and three steals.

The Fighting Scots now have two games this weekend. They host Mercyhurst for a PSAC West game on Saturday, December 6 and then meet non-conference foe Virginia State for the first time in program history on Sunday, December 7. Each game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in McComb Fieldhouse.
