Freeland Nears Triple-Double as Edinboro Snaps Losing Streak with 91-64 Rout of Mercyhurst

EDINBORO, Pa. (December 6, 2014) - The Edinboro women's basketball team snapped out of its three-game losing streak with a record day on Saturday afternoon in McComb Fieldhouse. The Fighting Scots shot a school record 61.4 percent (35-for-57) from the floor setting a new school record for highest field goal percentage in a single game during their 91-64 win against Mercyhurst. The Scots improve to 4-3 overall this year and 2-2 in the PSAC West while the Lakers fall to 1-7 overall and 0-4 in conference.

The field goal percentage record was previously held by the 1992-93 team that shot 60.2 percent at Ohio Dominican in a 113-72 victory. Edinboro shot 8-for-14 (57.1 percent) on 3-pointers, a season-high.

Aignee' Freeland narrowly missed the fifth triple-double in school history, finishing with a season-high 28 points, 14 rebounds, and a career-high eight assists. Valerie Majewski also had a big game in her second game of the season with 21 points on 8-for-11 shooting and 5-for-6 on 3-pointers in her second game of the season. The senior guard missed the first five games due to injury.

The two teams battled back-and-forth in the first half until Edinboro outscored Mercyhurst 18-10 over the final 5:39 of the opening half. Freeland and Laurel Lindsay closed the half with two scores in the final 28 seconds.

Freeland had 20 points and eight rebounds at halftime as she shot 7-for-10 from the field and 6-for-8 on free throws. Valerie Majewski added nine points at the break and was 4-for-6 shooting as the Fighting Scots were 17-for-29 (58.6 percent) at the break compared to the Lakers 15-for-35 (42.9 percent).

Edinboro carried on the momentum gained from the end of the first half by outscoring Mercyhurst 30-2 in the first eight minutes and 52 seconds of the half. The Fighting Scots run was 34-2 including the two field goals to conclude the first half over a nine-minute span. Edinboro shot 14-for-16 (87.5 percent), 3-for-4 on 3-pointers, and a perfect 3-for-3 at the free throw line. Majewski scored nine points during the run while Hope Mancini added eight points. The Fighting Scots led by at least 27 points the rest of the game.

Freeland finished 11-for-16 from the floor as the 11 field goals made were a season-high. The junior forward/center also added her first two blocks of the season. This was Freeland's 20th career double-double.

Majewski has averaged 18.0 ppg. over the last two games and is shooting 14-for-22 from the field and 7-for-11 on 3-pointers (both 63.6 percent). The 2014 WBCA All-American has now scored in double figures in 10 of her last 11 games.

Mancini was the only other Fighting Scot to score in double figures. The graduate student guard scored 11 points off the bench, shooting 4-for-7 from the floor and 2-for-4 on 3-pointers. It is the fifth time this season she has 11 or more points.

Edinboro dished out 27 assists in the game compared to 15 for Mercyhurst.

The Lakers shot 28-for-68 (41.2 percent) for the game and 5-for-16 (31.3 percent) on 3-pointers. The Fighting Scots also won in rebounding 41-29.

Angela Heintz led Mercyhurst with 13 points. Two others scored in double figures as Alex Artise finished with 12 points and Natalie Piaggesi scored 10.

Edinboro has less than 24 hours to rest as they host Virginia State of the CIAA tomorrow. The Lady Trojans enter with a 5-1 overall record. That game is scheduled to tip-off at 1:00 p.m.
