EDINBORO, Pa. (December 7, 2014) - Multiple players contributed for the Edinboro women's basketball team on Sunday afternoon in a 72-64 victory against Virginia State in McComb Fieldhouse. The Fighting Scots had three players score in double figures along with
Maggie Moore scoring a career-high eight points off the bench. Edinboro swept both of its games this weekend to improve to 5-3 overall while the Lady Trojans fall to 5-2.
Lauren Hippo returned to form on
Sunday with 17 points.Leading 18-12 with 9:34 showing on the clock in the first half, Edinboro pieced together a 13-2 run. Following an
Anastasia Riabchenko jumper at the 9:11 mark,
Aignee' Freeland and Tiffanie Adair were both assessed technical fouls for an altercation with 9:04 to play. That kick started the Fighting Scots as
Valerie Majewski and
Lauren Hippo combined for the next six Edinboro points before Moore and
Hope Mancini got in on the action. Moore scored a jumper with 6:21 left to make it 28-14 and then Mancini made a 3-pointer to cap off the run with 4:38 left in the half to take a 31-14 lead.
The Fighting Scots led 38-24 at halftime, their largest halftime lead of the season. Edinboro shot 14-for-32 (43.8 percent) from the field and 5-for-9 (55.6 percent) on 3-pointers. Hippo and Majewski led the way with 10 points at the break.
Edinboro extended its lead to as much as 19 points ahead 62-43 with 7:00 remaining in the game following a Moore layup.
The Lady Trojans refused to go away late into the second half. With 3:59 left in the game, Virginia State put together an 11-4 run. A layup by Adair with 1:54 to play brought the deficit back to single digits before Freeland responded with a jumper at the 1:22 mark to make it 72-61. Da'Shae Jones took a quick three attempt and was fouled by Freeland on the other end. The junior forward/center fouled out of the game while Jones made all three free throws to make it 72-64 with 1:12 remaining.
Neither team found the bottom of the net after that. The Lady Trojans chose to not foul the Scots on Edinboro's last two possessions leading to the final result of 72-64.
The Fighting Scots shot 30-for-62 (48.4 percent) from the floor compared to 23-for-55 (41.8 percent) for Virginia State. Edinboro made 7-for-13 (53.8 percent) on 3-pointers while the Lady Trojans went 5-for-12 (41.7 percent).
Virginia State outrebounded Edinboro 38-31. The Scots played efficient basketball with only nine turnovers and 20 assists on 30 field goals made. The Lady Trojans committed 16 turnovers.
Valerie Majewski is now shooting
58.8 percent on 3-pointers in her
three games this season.Majewski and Hippo each led Edinboro with 17 points. In only her third game of the season, Majewski shot 7-for-15 from the field including 3-for-6 on 3-pointers. The senior guard also contributed a season-high five assists. Hippo snapped out of a recent funk in which she had shot 6-for-34 (17.6 percent) over the last four games while missing all 10 of her 3-point attempts. The junior guard found her groove today making 7-for-10 from the floor and 3-for-4 on 3-pointers.
Moore played a career-high 21 minutes off the bench with Freeland in foul trouble. The sophomore forward responded with a career-high eight points on 4-for-6 from the floor. Freeland was the only other Scot to score in double figures, finishing with 10 points in 17 minutes.
Laurel Lindsay neared a double-double for the second straight game. The graduate student guard/forward finished with nine points and eight assists after nine points and seven assists against Mercyhurst on Saturday.
Mancini tied career-highs off the bench in five rebounds and five assists.
Virginia State was led by Tiffanie Adair who registered her sixth double-double of the season. She finished with 18 points on 7-for-15 from the field and 12 rebounds.
Jones added 15 points on 4-for-8 shooting off the bench along with a team-high five assists.
The Fighting Scots will now have over a week off before hosting back-to-back games against Cheyney and then Millersville. Those two games are scheduled for Tuesday, December 16 and Wednesday, December 17. Both will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. in McComb Fieldhouse.
