EDINBORO, Pa. (November 22, 2014) –
Jaymon Mason's career-high 23-point performance was not enough to give the Edinboro men's basketball team a victory on Saturday afternoon, as the Fighting Scots fell to California (Pa.) by a score of 69-63 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division contest at McComb Fieldhouse. The Fighting Scots suffered their first loss of the season, dropping to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in PSAC play. The Vulcans improved to 3-2 and 1-1 in the conference.
Trailing by three points at 60-57 with just over a minute remaining in the contest,
Henri Wade-Chatman drained two free throws to cut the deficit to one at 60-59. Unfortunately for Edinboro, California would sink 9 of 10 free throw attempts in the final 31 seconds of the game, never letting the lead shrink below three points to hold on for the conference triumph.
Tommy Scales tallied eight points and seven
boards off the bench.Mason's point total also represented a game-high, as he connected on 5 of 13 field goals, and 9 of 13 free throws. The redshirt freshman also knocked down four of nine tries from behind the arc.
Wade-Chatman was the only other Fighting Scot in double-figures with 15 markers, hitting 4 of 12 field goal attempts while making four of five shots from the charity stripe. Wade-Chatman was three of seven on three-pointers in the game and tied a team-high with seven rebounds.
Tommy Scales contributed eight points and grabbed seven boards off the bench, as well.
Arman Marks recorded a double-double for the Vulcans, tallying a team-high 22 points and game-high 12 rebounds. Marks shot 7 of 12 from the floor, including two of three on three-point attempts while sinking six of eight shots from the free throw line.
Khalil Jabbie and Tony Richardson posted 14 and 10 points, respectively for California and Richard Smith contributed 10 rebounds.
Edinboro trailed by as many as 10 points in the game at 33-23 with 1:58 to play in the first half after a layup by California's Jake Jacubec. The Fighting Scots cut the Vulcans' lead to six at 34-28 heading into halftime with a Wade Chatman three-pointer and a pair of Mason free throws in the final minute of the opening period.
Edinboro took its first lead of the second half at 50-49 with 7:52 remaining on a three-pointer by Wade-Chatman, marking the first time the Fighting Scots led since the 14:12 mark of the first half when Edinboro was ahead 10-7.
California regained a 51-50 advantage on the next possession on a Drew Cook jumper, a lead the Vulcans would not relinquish for the rest of the evening.
Edinboro was held 29.5 percent from the field (18-for-61), while the Vulcans shot 48.0 percent (24-50) from the floor. California was 14 of 27 from the field in the first half, while the Fighting Scots drained 8 of 25 field goal attempts (32 percent).
The Vulcans outscored Edinboro in the paint in the opening period 20-8.
The Fighting Scots shot 28 percent (7-for-25) from behind the arc, with all seven makes coming from Mason and Wade-Chatman. The Vulcans made just 3 of 12 three-point attempts, good for 25 percent.
Edinboro sank 76.9 percent (20-for-26) of free throw attempts in the loss, compared to California shooting 64.3 percent (18-28) from the stripe.
California outrebounded the Fighting Scots 43-37 in the win.
Edinboro returns to action Tuesday, November 25 hosting Penn State DuBois in a non-conference matchup. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. from McComb Fieldhouse.
