EDINBORO, Pa. (November 3, 2014) - The Edinboro women's soccer team heads back to familiar territory on Tuesday afternoon for the PSAC Quarterfinals. The sixth-seeded Fighting Scots travel to third-seeded Kutztown for a 1:00 p.m. affair. Edinboro enters the game with a 10-6-2 overall record and 9-5-2 record in the PSAC while the Golden Bears are 13-4-0 overall and 12-4-0 in conference play.
These two teams met six days ago in a game that was close throughout. Edinboro upset Kutztown 2-1 behind goals from
Reilee DuPratt and
Alex Brown. Megan Frailer got the Golden Bears on the board first in the 48
th minute when she scored on a penalty kick. DuPratt scored her first career goal on an assist from Brown thirty minutes later to knot the game up at 1-1. Three minutes later in the 81
st minute,
Allyson Overly shot went off the crossbar and Brown scored on the rebound.
This will be the third time in the last five seasons that the Fighting Scots and Golden Bears have met in the PSAC Tournament. They split the first two match-ups with Kutztown victories in 2010 5-1 and Edinboro winning 2-1 in 2012. The postseason meeting two years ago featured many of the players that will be on the pitch Tuesday. Overly and
Jansen Hartmann each scored early in the first half to build the Fighting Scots lead to 2-0. Kutztown senior Hanna Fenstermacher scored in the 70
th minute to close the gap to 2-1 but
Meghan Kelly kept the last three Golden Bear shots out of the net. Kelly finished the game with seven saves.
Hartmann is tied for the Fighting Scots lead in goals (6) and leads the team in assists (5) and points (16). Each one of those marks is a career-high for the junior midfielder/forward. Hartmann is now 14
th place for career goals (14) and 13
th in school history in points (42).
Becca Costello moved up in the career ranks with her game-winning goal on Saturday against Notre Dame (Ohio). Costello has now scored 15 career goals to move into a tie for 10
th in school history and now has 44 career points, good for 11
th in the record book.
Liz Debo is the school's all-time leader in goals scored. The senior forward has tallied six goals this year to push her career total to 39. Debo is six points away from tying Nicole Vlahovic for first in school history in points.
Kelly continues to add on to her multiple school records. The senior goalkeeper has a 10-6-2 record this year with a 0.97 goals against average and 76.6 save percentage. Kelly holds school records in wins (41), minutes (6407), and shutouts (21). She is now tied for tenth all-time in PSAC history with the 21 shutouts. Kelly was also recently honored as a Capital One Academic All-American District 2. It was the second straight year she earned that prestigious award.
The Golden Bears are led by Sam Costello The senior forward was a first team All-PSAC honoree last year and currently has nine goals and four assists for 22 points. Costello, who holds no relation to Edinboro's
Becca Costello, scored two goals in Kutztown's 5-1 win against Mansfield on Saturday.
Deanna Messner is the Kutztown goalkeeper. The freshman holds a 13-4-0 record this season and holds an 0.71 goals against average and 84.4 save percentage.
Edinboro holds a 9-6-1 advantage in the series. The winner will face the winner of second-seeded West Chester and seventh-seeded Gannon. The PSAC Semifinals and Championship will be hosted by the highest seeded team to advance. If top-seeded East Stroudsburg defeats Indiana (Pa.) tomorrow, they will host the last two rounds. If that is the case the winner of the Edinboro/Kutztown and Gannon/West Chester game will play at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, November 7 with the championship occurring at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 8.
