Brogdon's 24 Points Not Enough in 91-78 Loss at Wheeling Jesuit

WHEELING, W.Va. (Nov. 30, 2014) – Edinboro scored the first six points of the game, but after that it was all Wheeling Jesuit as the Fighting Scots suffered a 91-78 loss on Sunday afternoon at the McDonough Center. The loss dropped the Fighting Scots to 3-2 while the Cardinals improved to 3-1.

Edinboro ran off the first six points on a Casey Baker layup, a jumper by Henri Wade-Chatman, and a Will Marrow jumper, but a fast-paced Wheeling Jesuit team followed with an 11-0 run fueled by three 3-pointers, two by Eric Seifert. It was a sign of things to come as the Cardinals made 7 of 14 3-pointers in the opening twenty minutes.

Leading 23-19, WJU went on a 14-2 run that was keyed by a pair of three's by Justin Fritts, who accounted for eight points in the burst. Haywood Highsmith capped the run with a layup, while Edinboro could make just a pair of free throws in the stretch.

The lead would grow to 20 points at the half at 49-29.  The final basket came on a putback by Fritts at the buzzer after Seifert missed a long 3-pointer. The offensive rebound was the 11th of the half for the Cardinals, almost as many rebounds as Edinboro had total. The Scots were outrebounded 30-13 in the half.

Wheeling Jesuit shot 48.6 percent in the first half while the Fighting Scots could make just 11 of 33 field goal attempts (33.3 pct.), including 1 of 10 3-pointers.

Edinboro would close to 15 points at 78-63 with 7:28 left in the game on a Sheldon Brogdon 3-pointer. The sophomore guard scored 10 of his game-high 24 points in a span of two minutes. Wheeling Jesuit responded with a 15-2 run to quell the Scots' comeback hopes, taking its biggest lead of the game at 90-65 with 3:50 to play. The Fighting Scots would outscore the Cardinals 13-1 the rest of the way.

Wheeling Jesuit ended the game making 34 of 64 field goal attempts (53.1 pct.), including a sizzling 59.3 percent (16 of 27) in the second half. Edinboro also warmed up over the final twenty minutes, making 16 of 34 shots (47.1 pct.) to end the game at 40.3 percent (27 of 67). The Scots also did a better job on the glass in the second half and ended up being outrebounded 42-33.  Wheeling Jesuit committed 16 turnovers and Edinboro 13.

Brogdon led all scorers with 24 points as four Fighting Scots hit double figures. The Youngstown State transfer made 8 of 14 field goals, including 3 of 7 3-pointers, and was 5 of 6 at the free throw line.

Henri Wade-Chatman added 17 points before fouling out. Redshirt freshman guard Jaymon Mason had 10 points on the strength of an 8-for-8 showing at the line, with Tommy Scales coming off the bench for 10 points and a team-high 9 rebounds.
