EDINBORO, Pa. (December 16, 2014) – After leading by one point at the half, the Edinboro men's basketball team outscored Cheyney 45-24 over the final twenty minutes to claim a 74-54 win over the Wolves at McComb Fieldhouse on Tuesday night. The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Fighting Scots as they improved to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in the PSAC. Cheyney is now 1-8 and 0-4, respectively.
While the young Wolves have won just once this season, they have proven a difficult challenge, with just one loss by more than 11 points. Slowing the pace of the game down in the first 20 minutes Cheyney led 30-29. The Wolves took advantage of 6-for-14 shooting in 3-pointers as the first half saw seven ties and seven lead changes, with neither team leading by more than five points.
Henri Wade-Chatman had 12 of his 14 points in the second half.Cheyney boosted its lead to 32-29 at the start of the second half on a jumper by Blake McGlond. Edinboro would run off the next ten points and outscored the Wolves 23-5 over the first eight-plus minutes of the second half.
Tommy Scales opened the 10-0 run with a jumper, and
Henri Wade-Chatman followed with a 3-pointer.
Casey Baker's layup made it 36-32 and Wade-Chatman followed with another three to cap the run.
A
Sheldon Brogdon 3-pointer gave Edinboro a 52-37 lead with 11:46 left in the game, and Cheyney would never pull closer than 11 the rest of the game.
The Edinboro defense picked it up in the second half, as the Fighting Scots limited Cheyney to 27.3 percent shooting from the floor (9-of-33). The Wolves were 4-for-20 on 3-pointers, and two of those were banked in.
The Scots, meanwhile, shot 56.0 percent from the floor (14-of-25), and made 4-of-6 3-pointers. Edinboro ended the night at 41.4 percent (24-of-58) and made 20-of-28 free throws. Cheyney was 19-for-57 from the floor (33.3 percent), including 10-of-34 on 3-pointers, and made 6-of-12 free throws.
Edinboro dominated the glass, pulling down 45 rebounds, including 15 offensive, to Cheyney's 34. The Scots outscored Cheyney 36-to-10 in the paint. In addition, they forced 14 turnovers which led to 17 points.
Jaymon Mason led all scorers with 19 points. The freshman guard made 6-of-11 shots, including 2-of-5 3-pointers, and was 5-for-7 from the line. In fact, the only negative for Mason was the two missed free throws, as he saw a string of 24 consecutive free throws made snapped.
Wade-Chatman added 14 points, with 12 of those coming in the second half. Baker fell one rebound shy of a double-double, finishing with 10 points and 9 rebounds.
Mike Beck had strong effort off the bench.Freshmen once again played a huge role in the win.
Quinn Lee Yaw contributed 8 points and 6 rebounds in 18 minutes, while
Mike Beck was one of the keys to the second half run with his strong defense. He would finish with 4 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and a pair of steals in 23 minutes.
Junior forward
Tommy Scales started for the second straight game at center and ended the night with 6 points and 7 rebounds.
Kevin larkin, the third-leading scorer in the PSAC at 18.3 ppg. coming in, finished with 17 points, making 4-of-11 3-pointers. He also had 4 blocked shots. Rasahn Brinkley added 17 points.
Edinboro is right back in action on Wednesday, December 17. The Fighting Scots will host Millersville in the second of back-to-back games against PSAC East foes. Tipoff at McComb Fieldhouse is set for 7:30 p.m.
