Fighting Scots Cruise Past Lady Cats 89-80

EDINBORO, Pa. (February 1, 2014) - The Edinboro women's basketball team rebounded from its loss to Davis & Elkins on Thursday with an 89-80 victory versus Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday afternoon at McComb Fieldhouse. The Fighting Scots improved their record to 15-4 overall and 9-0 in the PSAC West while the Lady Cats fell to 7-13, 4-6 in conference.

Aignee' Freeland led four players in double figures with her fourth straight double-double and eighth of the season. The sophomore forward finished with 24 points and 10 rebounds, shooting 10-for-18 from the floor and 4-for-6 from the free throw line.

Darche' Jackson added 18 points on 6-for-12 from the floor. She is now 21 points away from becoming the 28th member of the 1,000-point club. The senior guard also pulled down five rebounds and dished out four assists.

Valerie Majewski led all Fighting Scots with six assists. The junior guard scored 16 points while going 10-for-12 from the free throw line.

Laurel Lindsay was perfect from the floor, scoring 16 points on 5-for-5 shooting. The junior guard/forward also had a team-high five steals.

Pitt-Johnstown led for a brief period early, its biggest lead at two points on two different occasions, the last at 9-7 with 15:15 to play in the first half.

A Lindsay layup to go ahead 13-9 would give the Scots their first two-possession lead of the game and they would go onto lead by four points the rest of the way.

Beginning at the 5:47 mark ahead 30-24, Edinboro would go on a 9-1 run to take a 39-25 lead with 3:43 left in the half. The 14-point lead was the Scots biggest of the game.

Over the final 2:24 of the first half, the Lady Cats would piece together a 12-4 run to head into the locker room trailing just 45-39. Jackson and Majewski each had scored in double-digits at halftime, with 12 and 11, respectively.

The Fighting Scots would take their biggest lead of the second half following a 7-2 run capped off by a Jackson 3-pointer to go ahead 66-53 with 10:22 to play.

The Lady Cats would pull within seven points with 1:23 to play following a 7-2 run with four of the points coming from Kayla DeCriscio. They would not close the gap any tighter, however, as the Scots went 3-for-4 from the free throw line to close the game out.

For Pitt-Johnstown, Nicole Carman led the way off the bench with 20 points on 5-for-10 from the floor, 10-for-11 from the charity strike. She tied for the team lead with eight rebounds.

Two other players also had eight rebounds for the Lady Cats. Jasmine Harper finished with 15 points and eight rebounds while Inaya Stephenson added 11 points and eight rebounds.

Leah Hansen, a General McLane product along with current Edinboro players Majewski and Lindsay Jahn, led UPJ with three assists and added seven points.

Edinboro had one its best games from the free three line, making a season-high 32 on 44 attempts. Pitt-Johnstown was efficient in fewer trips to the line shooting 28-for-30 on free throws. The Lady Cats committed 20 turnovers in the game while the Fighting Scots had just 13.

The Scots shot a season-low five three-point attempts, hitting three of them. UPJ came into the game averaging over eight 3-pointers made per game on 23.9 attempts, but shot 4-for-17 on 3-pointers.
Overall each team shot over 40 percent, with Edinboro shooting 47.4 percent and Pitt-Johnstown 42.9 percent.

The Lady Cats bench severely outscored the Fighting Scots bench, 35-11.

Edinboro will play this upcoming Wednesday, February 5 at Seton Hill. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. as the Scots look to remain perfect in the PSAC West.
