EDINBORO, Pa. (September 15, 2014) – The Edinboro volleyball team opens the home portion of its 2014 schedule with a non-conference matchup against Notre Dame (Ohio) on Tuesday, September 16 at 7 p.m. at McComb Fieldhouse.
The Fighting Scots come into Tuesday's match sporting a 6-2 overall record on the season after posting a perfect 4-0 mark in this weekend's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference/Mountain East Conference Crossover at Gannon University in Erie, Pa.
Tuesday's matchup with the Falcons is a rematch of Edinboro's final game in the crossover, in which the Fighting Scots came out victorious by a score of 3-1 (20-25, 25-23, 25-16, 25-16). Notre Dame owns a 2-6 overall ledger this season.
With a win over Notre Dame (Ohio) on Tuesday night, the Fighting Scots can match their longest winning streak from last season of five matches.
Jen Gruber paces the Edinboro attack with 72 kills on the season, followed by
Marah Maycock at 60 kills. Maycock has also recorded a team-high 2.61 kills per set.
Challen Litwiler ranks third in the conference and leads the Fighting Scots with 16 service aces to go along with 42 kills and 80 digs during her freshman campaign. Litwiler posted a season-high 12 kills in Edinboro's 3-1 win over Notre Dame on Saturday.
Haley Marett, who set a single-season school record in 2013 with 751 digs, ranks fourth in the PSAC with 144 digs this season.
Along with Litwiler,
Sydney Trathen has proven to be a valuable asset in just her first season with the Fighting Scots, ranking sixth in the league with 216 assists. Trathen ranks fifth on the team with 43 kills and third with 10 blocks, as well.
Maria Concheck leads Edinboro with 22 blocks, while
Latoya Hutchinson has recorded 16 total blocks this season.
The Fighting Scots sit third in the PSAC in assists per set at 11.79, third in the conference in kills per set at 12.93, fourth in the league in opponent hitting percentage at 0.088 and third in the conference in opponent kills per set at 8.5.
Linsday Shirilla paces the Falcons with 77 total kills on the season, ranking seventh in the Mountain East Conference. Shirilla tallied a season-high 16 kills in Notre Dame's 3-2 win over Philadelphia University on September 6, followed by a 13-kill output against Davis & Elkins later that day. The 6'0'' junior also posted a team-high 11 kills when the Fighting Scots and Falcons met in the PSAC/MEC Crossover over the weekend. Shirilla has contributed 27 digs and six total blocks on the season, as well.
The Fighting Scots hold a 7-0 advantage in the teams' all-time series dating back to 2005, outscoring the Falcons 21-6 in those matches.
After Tuesday's contest, Edinboro travels to West Chester on Friday, September 19 and Cheyney on Saturday, September 20 for a PSAC Crossover weekend. The Fighting Scots take on West Chester and East Stroudsburg on Friday, before battling Cheyney and Kutztown on Saturday.
