ERIE, Pa. (September 26, 2014) – The Edinboro volleyball team captured its tenth consecutive victory with a 3-1 (24-26, 27-25, 25-23, 25-1) triumph over host Mercyhurst on Friday night in Erie, Pa. The Fighting Scots improved to 12-2 overall and 5-0 in PSAC play, while the Lakers fell to 9-3 and 4-1 on the season with the loss.
After Mercyhurst picked up a 26-24 victory in the first set to take a 1-0 lead, Edinboro earned 27-25 and 25-23 wins in the second and third sets to gain a 2-1 advantage.
Trailing the Lakers 20-15 in the fourth set, the Fighting Scots outscored Mercyhurst 10-1 for the remainder of the contest to collect a 3-2 triumph and extend their winning streak to ten matches.
Edinboro's ten match winning streak represents its longest since the Fighting Scots won 16 contests in a row during the 2010 campaign.
Jen Gruber paced the Edinboro attack with a game-high 15 kills, followed by
Latoya Hutchinson and
Maria Concheck with 10 kills apiece.
Sydney Trathen dished out a team-high 34 assists and
Katie Felix added 18 assists on the night.
Haley Marett led four Fighting Scots in double-figure digs with 20 digs.
Marah Maycock posted 16 digs, while Trathen and
Challen Litwiler each recorded 10 digs in the win.
Rachel Crittle and Erin Byrnes each tallied 12 kills to lead the Lakers. Kelly Vitt recorded a game-high 43 assists, while Samantha Giardina posted 25 kills to lead all players for Mercyhurst.
Edinboro returns to action tomorrow travelling to Erie, Pa. to take on local rival Gannon at 2 p.m. at the Hammermill Center. The Lady Knights enter Saturday's match with a perfect 12-0 overall mark and a 5-0 ledger in PSAC play after a 3-0 sweep of Slippery Rock on Friday night. Gannon received votes in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) NCAA Division II National Rankings.
