Edinboro Falls Short at No. 16 IUP 79-69

INDIANA, Pa. (January 14, 2015) – In a game which featured five ties and 13 lead changes, the Edinboro men's basketball team battled, but ultimately dropped a 79-69 decision to 16th-ranked Indiana (Pa.) in a PSAC Western Division contest on Wednesday night at the Kovalchik Complex in Indiana, Pa. The Fighting Scots fell to 7-9 on the season and 4-8 in PSAC play, while the Crimson Hawks boosted their record to 15-2 overall and 9-2 in the conference.

Unfortunately for Edinboro, the Fighting Scots ran into a red-hot IUP team which has now won eight straight games and 13 consecutive contests against Edinboro. The Fighting Scots have now dropped four of their last five games.

Despite the losing streak against the perennial power Crimson Hawks, the Fighting Scots once again gave IUP all it could handle, before the hosts were able to hold on for the victory.

Henri Wade-Chatman added 14 points for Edinboro

Trailing by seven points at 64-57 with 7:04 to play in the game, Edinboro rattled off five straight points, including jumpers by Will Marrow and Casey Baker to cut the Crimson Hawks' lead to two points at 64-62 with 4:42 remaining.

IUP answered with an 8-2 run to build its lead to eight points at 72-64 with just over a minute to play.

Edinboro would cut the deficit to five points at 74-69 with 33 seconds showing on the clock after a Tommy Scales jumper, but that was as close as the Fighting Scots would come as IUP knocked down 5-of-6 free throws from that point on, pulling away for the 10-point triumph.

Jaymon Mason paced Edinboro with 15 points on 5-of-11 shooting. The redshirt freshman knocked down 3-of-7 shots from behind the arc and was a perfect 2-of-2 from the charity stripe.

Henri Wade-Chatman was the only other Fighting Scot to score in double-figures on the night with 14 markers, connecting on 4-of-12 field goals, 1-of-3 3-pointers and 5-of-10 free throws. The Pittsburgh native also dished out a game-high five assists.

Casey Baker contributed nine points, while Sam Sealy-James scored a career-high eight points for Edinboro. Scales chipped in eight points off the bench and Will Marrow pulled down a team-high seven rebounds, as well.

Shawn Dyer posted a double-double for the Crimson Hawks with game-highs of 25 points and 10 rebounds. Devante Chance tallied 24 points, while Jeremy Jeffers added 11 markers for IUP.

Edinboro shot 44.8 percent (26 of 58) from the field on the night, including 38.5 percent (5 of 13) from long range. The Fighting Scots were 52.2 percent (12 of 23) from the free throw line.

IUP connected on 47.1 percent (24 of 51) of field goals in the win and was 42.9 percent (9 of 21) from behind the arc, while the Crimson Hawks shot 66.7 percent (22 of 33) from the charity stripe.

The Fighting Scots owned a 38-35 advantage on the glass, including 14 offensive boards, which led to 11 second chance points. Edinboro's bench outscored the Crimson Hawk reserves 16-7 on the night.

IUP garnered 15 points off 11 Fighting Scot turnovers and the Crimson Hawks earned a 10-0 advantage in fast break points.

Edinboro scored the first eight points of the game, including five markers from Mason and a dunk by Sealy-James to take its largest lead of the night at 8-0 at the 16:32 mark of the first half.

IUP answered with a 9-2 run to cut the Fighting Scots' lead to 10-9 with 12:42 to play in the opening period.

The Crimson Hawks would take their first lead of the game at 17-16 after a 3-pointer by Dyer with 8:44 remaining in the half, before Edinboro responded with a 7-2 run capped by Marrow's shot from behind the arc, giving the Fighting Scots a 23-19 advantage with just under six minutes to play in the half.

The two teams traded the lead for the remainder of the opening stanza with neither team leading by more than four points. Jeffers' 3-pointer with three seconds showing on the clock gave the Crimson Hawks a 34-32 lead heading into the break.

Edinboro returns home to face Clarion in a PSAC West matchup on Saturday, January 17. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. at McComb Fieldhouse. The Fighting Scots have won six consecutive meetings with the Golden Eagles.
